Happitat Adventure Park
Happitat, Gold Coast Hinterland: the guided via ferrata and zipline park on the Binna Burra cliffs
Australia's first via ferrata has officially opened in Queensland. Set in the spectacular Springbrook National Park, Happitat combines cliff walks, suspension bridges, ziplines, and via ferrata routes with incredible rainforest and mountain views. Unlike many European via ferratas, this is a fully guided experience with a strong focus on safety and accessibility. Perfect for those looking for adventure without extreme risk.
A cliff park inside Lamington National Park, Queensland, that strings via ferrata routes, an 80-metre suspension bridge and ziplines along one rock face, with guides and a locked clip system the whole way. Here is how a day works, what it costs, how to book, and how to get there.

What Happitat is
Happitat Adventure Park is a guided cliff park on the Binna Burra escarpment inside Lamington National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage rainforest in the Gold Coast Hinterland of Queensland. It opened to the public on 10 January 2026. The operator calls it the world’s first cliff park: instead of separate rides bolted onto a hillside, the via ferrata routes, timber log crossings, tightropes, an 80-metre suspension bridge, three ziplines and a lookout platform are built into one rock face and joined into a single route.
The park sits about 400 metres above the valley floor, a little over an hour from Surfers Paradise and about ninety minutes from Brisbane. Guests do not drive to the cliff. Cars stay at a dedicated carpark on Beechmont Road and a shuttle bus climbs the last twenty minutes to the park. Everything on the cliff is guided, and everyone wears a harness clipped to a continuous safety cable.
My reel calls it Australia’s first via ferrata. What the sources confirm is that it is the first purpose-built cliff park of this kind in the country and the first guided via ferrata experience at this scale in Queensland. Springbrook National Park, which my reel mentions, is the neighbouring park across the Numinbah Valley; Happitat itself is in Lamington.
Who is behind it
Happitat was founded by Michael Neururer, an Austrian-born conservationist, alpine adventurer and former professional snowboarder who settled in Queensland. He built the park in partnership with Binna Burra Lodge, the historic mountain lodge that has stood at the edge of Lamington National Park since 1933 and was badly damaged in the 2019 bushfires. The operator says more than one million AUD went into restoration and native planting around the site and that the park runs as a zero-waste operation.
Awards and press
- Time Out, 26 Best Things to Do in the World in 2026: Happitat ranked fourth, published in early 2026.
- Opening coverage in Time Out Australia, Urban List Gold Coast, Style Magazines and Tourism and Events Queensland.
How a visit works
A full day at Happitat follows a set order. You meet the shuttle at the carpark at your booked session time, ride twenty minutes up the mountain, then walk about 1.2 kilometres through rainforest to the park entrance. Guides fit harnesses and helmets and run a training session on a practice wall before anyone touches the cliff. From there the route is continuous.
- The Arete Via Ferrata Tour: steel rungs and fixed cables up and across the cliff, with tightropes, timber log crossings and the 80-metre suspension bridge above the valley. Rated moderate fitness.
- The Overhang Zipline Tour: three lines through the treetops past waterfalls and cliff faces.
- Total Exposure: the highest and longest zipline in the park, roughly 200 metres above the forest canopy.
- The Edge Park: bush trails, rock pools and a 12-metre cantilevered viewing platform with a 400-metre drop, open to spectators as well as climbers.
The safety system is a set of belay clips that stay locked on the cable until a guide releases them at designated exit points, so a guest cannot unclip both clips by accident. Guides stay with each group throughout.
What I did when I filmed
I visited in the Australian winter, June 2026, and did the cliff walks, the suspension bridge, the ziplines and the via ferrata sections as one guided route. The whole course is guided from start to finish, unlike most European via ferratas where you clip in on your own, and the design leans toward safety and accessibility rather than difficulty. If you are an experienced climber or alpine hiker you may find it more controlled than what you are used to.
What it costs
Prices are in Australian dollars and have changed more than once since opening. The Happitat website in September 2026 listed:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Ultimate Cliff Park Pass, 5 to 7 hours, all elements | 349 AUD, about 225 USD |
| The Overhang Zipline Tour, 2 to 2.5 hours | 149 AUD, about 95 USD |
| The Arete Via Ferrata Pass, 1 to 2 hours | 129 AUD, about 85 USD |
| Total Exposure Zipline Pass, 1 to 2 hours | 99 AUD, about 65 USD |
| Edge Park Pass, walk and lookout only | Free |
At launch in January 2026 the full-day pass was 497 AUD, about 320 USD, and a five-hour pass was later listed at 377 AUD, so treat any figure you read as a snapshot. Group rates for four to nine people and for ten or more are lower. Food at the cafe, fuel and the drive are extra; the shuttle from the carpark is included.
How to book
Book in advance through happitat.com.au. Sessions are capped by guide capacity and weekends sell out first.

The park has been running Thursday to Monday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, since early 2026. The cancellation policy is full refund or free reschedule with more than seven days notice, 50 percent refund or full credit between 48 hours and seven days, and no refund inside 48 hours. No-shows are not refunded. If the park itself closes for weather you get a full refund or priority rebooking.
Getting there
- Carpark and check-in: Walden Cafe, 1696 Beechmont Road, Beechmont, Queensland 4211.
- Shuttle: about 20 minutes from the carpark up to the cliff at Binna Burra. Your session starts when the shuttle leaves, so be there early.
- From Surfers Paradise or the Gold Coast: about 55 minutes to one hour by car.
- From Brisbane: about 90 minutes.
- From Byron Bay: under two hours.
- Public transport: none to the carpark. A car or a private transfer is the only practical option.
- Staying nearby: Binna Burra Lodge has rooms, safari tents and a campground a few minutes from the park.
Before you go
- Check the limits first. Minimum height 120 cm, weight 25 to 120 kg. Not recommended for pregnancy, heart conditions, recent surgery, or neck and back problems.
- Kids need an adult. Twelve and under with a paying parent or guardian; eight to twelve with an adult next to them on ziplines and via ferrata; under eighteen needs a signed waiver.
- Wear closed-toe shoes with grip. Sandals are refused. Tie back long hair, bring a cap or bucket hat that fits under a helmet, sunscreen and a water bottle. Dress in layers; the escarpment is cooler and windier than the coast, especially in winter.
- Eat before or after, not during. Smoking, eating and drinking are not allowed on the course. Little Walden Cafe at the carpark does coffee, toasties and acai bowls; Binna Burra Tea House does proper meals.
- Allow the whole day. The full pass runs five to seven hours including the shuttle, the walk in and the briefing. Do not book an evening flight out of Coolangatta the same day.
- Fitness. The operator’s benchmark is a three-hour hike. The via ferrata sections involve sustained exposure and some upper-body work.
- Pair it with the rest of the hinterland. Binna Burra is the trailhead for Lamington’s rainforest walks, and Springbrook National Park with Natural Bridge is about 30 to 40 minutes away by car.
- Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.
