What Orchid House Baja is
Orchid House Baja is a small five-star boutique hotel and beach club on the Sea of Cortez at kilometre 5 of the scenic road between La Paz and the Pichilingue ferry port. The building is the former Casa de Gobierno El Caimancito, the official guest residence of the Baja California Sur government, built in 1948 out of local stone, brick and palm beams as a rest house for Mexican presidents and their visitors.
The house takes its name from a rock formation in the water below that looks like a small crocodile, a caimancito, when the tide drops. For half a century it hosted heads of state; press histories in Baja California Sur list Miguel Alemán, Dwight Eisenhower, George W. Bush and, in February 1983, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who were given an official breakfast here during their state visit to Mexico. From 1999 it spent about six years as an aquarium, and in 2020 the state decided to lease it to raise money.
Orchid House Hotels won that lease in 2022 and reopened the residence as a hotel with an infinity-edge pool over the sea, a private stretch of Playa El Caimancito, a restaurant under a palapa on the water, and a day pass for people who are not staying overnight.
Who is behind it
Orchid House Hotels is a Mexican boutique group whose other houses are restored historic buildings in Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende, Tulum and Puerto Escondido. Its representative in the 2022 bid, Patricio Vargas, told local press that the La Paz house would be the crown jewel of the brand. The lease, as reported by Diario El Independiente and Radio Fórmula, runs five years at 660,000 MXN per month plus seven percent of annual profits paid to the state.
No head chef is named on the hotel’s site or in the press I found. The kitchen is described by the hotel as chef-driven, with a menu built on regional seafood.
How a visit works
There are three ways to use the property: an overnight stay, a full day pass, or a beach-only pass.
- Stay: nine room categories from a 35 square metre suite and Botanic Bungalows in the garden to Ocean Suites with balconies, a Master Ocean Suite of 84 square metres, a Presidential Ocean Suite of 145 square metres with terrace, and a 200 square metre two-bedroom villa. Rooms have air conditioning, minibar, Netflix-enabled TV, coffee maker and room service from 8:00 to 22:00. Check-in runs 15:00 to 23:00 and check-out is at 12:00.
- Day pass: 1,000 MXN per person, minimum age 15, access to the pool area and beach club from 11:00 to 19:00. The full amount is credited against food and drink.
- Beach Day: 500 MXN per person, no age limit, access to the El Caimancito beach club from 12:00 to 18:00, also credited against consumption.
- Restaurant: El Caimancito Restaurant and Beach Club serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8:00 to 22:00 under an oceanfront palapa. The hotel highlights oysters with lime, seafood tostadas and Baja classics; guest reviews mention a house burger and fish wonton tacos at the beach club. There is a beach bar and a sunset bar.
- Activities: kayaks and snorkel gear on site, a 37-foot Axopar boat called La OrquÃdea for private trips, and bookable whale shark snorkelling, grey whale watching, island tours, sandboarding and sport fishing. Spa treatments are listed at 2,800 MXN for 60 minutes, about 150 USD.
What I saw when I filmed
When I filmed in July the infinity pool hung directly over the water, the beach below was in use by day visitors, and the restaurant was serving from breakfast through to cocktails. I went in on a day pass rather than as a hotel guest.
What it costs
Day passes and beach passes are quoted in pesos and work as consumption credit rather than a separate fee. Room rates are published in US dollars.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Day pass, pool and beach club, 15 and over, 11:00 to 19:00 | 1,000 MXN, about 53 USD, all credited to food and drink |
| Beach Day, beach club only, all ages, 12:00 to 18:00 | 500 MXN, about 27 USD, credited to food and drink |
| Suite, two people, per night | from 285 USD plus tax, about 5,300 MXN |
| Presidential suite and villa, per night | above 20,000 MXN, about 1,070 USD, according to local press |
| Spa treatment, 60 minutes | 2,800 MXN, about 150 USD |
A TikTok post from June 2025 quoted the pass as a minimum spend of 500 MXN on weekdays and 1,000 MXN at weekends, so the weekday figure may be lower than the standard listing. Prices change with the season and with whale season demand from December to April; confirm by WhatsApp before you drive out.
How to book
- Rooms: book on baja.orchidhousehotels.com, by phone or WhatsApp at +52 612 177 1004, or by email at hello@orchidhousehotels.com. Booking.com and Expedia also list the hotel.
- Day pass and Beach Day: subject to availability and capacity, since the hotel has roughly a dozen rooms and the pool is small. Message the hotel on WhatsApp or Instagram, @orchidhousebaja, the day before, especially for weekends.
- Restaurant: outside diners are welcome at El Caimancito; reserve for dinner and for sunset seats.
Guest support runs 7:00 to 23:00, with WhatsApp after hours.
Getting there
- Address: Carretera Escénica km 5, El Caimancito, La Paz, Baja California Sur 23019, Mexico. The scenic road is also called Carretera a Pichilingue.
- Neighbourhood: the coastal strip northeast of the city between Playa Coromuel and Playa El Caimancito, about 5 kilometres from the malecón.
- From the La Paz malecón: about 10 to 20 minutes by car, taxi or Uber.
- From La Paz airport (LAP): about 20 to 35 minutes by road.
- Public transport: colectivos and buses that run to Pichilingue and the beaches pass along the road; ask for El Caimancito.
- Parking: free on site.
- Balandra and Tecolote beaches are a further 20 to 25 minutes up the same road, which makes the hotel a practical stop on the way back.
Before you go
- Take the pass rules seriously. The full pass is 15 and over; the beach-only pass has no age limit. Check the overnight child policy directly, since booking sites disagree.
- The beach is shared. Reviewers note that the hotel’s beach club is small and sits beside a busy public stretch of El Caimancito; the pool is where the calm is.
- Hours are fixed. The pool pass ends at 19:00 and the beach pass at 18:00. Sunset drinks belong at the sunset bar, not on the sand.
- Expect a short menu. Guests praise the food but say the dinner menu changes little; lunch and breakfast have more variety.
- Cash and cards. Cards are accepted; carry some pesos for tips and for the colectivo if you use it.
- Weather. The hotel has repaired storm damage before; in hurricane season, August to October, confirm the beach club is open.
- Pair it with Los Cabos. If you are driving south, Hotel El Ganzo in San José del Cabo runs a similar day-pass model on an art hotel with a rooftop pool. See my Hotel El Ganzo review.
- Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

She visited. The building was the Casa de Gobierno El Caimancito, the Baja California Sur government's guest residence, and on 22 February 1983 Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were given a breakfast there during their state visit to Mexico. How many rooms does Orchid House Baja have?+
It is small. The hotel lists nine room categories, from a 35 square metre suite and garden bungalows to ocean suites with balconies, an 84 square metre Master Ocean Suite, a 145 square metre Presidential Ocean Suite and a 200 square metre two-bedroom villa.
