What Orquídea is

Orquídea Café is a small specialty coffee shop on Avenida Ámsterdam, in Colonia Hipódromo, the inner ring of the Condesa area of Mexico City. It sits under the tree canopy that runs the whole length of the avenue, with tables outside on the pavement and a compact room behind them.

What separates it from the dozens of other cafés within a few blocks is the baking. Orquídea is built around gluten-free, sugar-free and keto pastry, and it is the actual product rather than a shelf of tolerated substitutes. The case runs to gluten-free banana bread, cookies, muffins and cakes, and the café appears on dedicated gluten-free restaurant directories, which is not something most coffee shops with a token gluten-free muffin manage.

The coffee side is straightforward specialty work, roasted by Pare de Dormir, a Mexican roaster, with an unusually long list of milk alternatives: oat, almond, macadamia, rice, coconut and soy. The café was already operating by late 2022 and holds no guide listing or award.

Who is behind it

The ownership is not published. What the café does say about itself is the direction of travel: it started by making pastry, and the pastry is what built the reputation. The kitchen works to three constraints at once, no gluten, no sugar and keto-compatible ratios, which is a harder brief than any of them alone and explains why the range is smaller and the prices higher than at a conventional bakery.

The coffee programme is outsourced to a roaster rather than done in house, which is the normal and sensible arrangement for a café this size in Mexico City.

How the menu works

Orquídea is counter service. You order, you pay, you take a table inside or one of the outdoor seats facing Ámsterdam.

  • Coffee: espresso-based drinks made with Pare de Dormir beans, plus cacao latte, chai latte and matcha.
  • Milks: dairy, oat, almond, macadamia, rice, coconut or soy.
  • The pastry case: gluten-free banana bread, cookies, muffins with blueberry or cacao and almond, and cakes. Much of it is also sugar free, and part of it is built to keto ratios.
  • Vegan baking: cookies made with avocado oil rather than butter.
  • Breakfast plates: waffles with red berries and granola, a protein waffle, avocado toast, yoghurt with berries and granola, green juice.
  • To take away: the case sells whole loaves and boxes as well as single pieces.

The practical point is that you can order almost anything on this menu with a real dietary restriction and not be handed a compromise. That is the reason people travel across the city to a café that from the street looks like every other café in Condesa.

What it costs

Orquídea does not publish a price list. The figures below are the range listings give for a typical visit, seen in September 2026.

Coffee and something from the caseRoughly 100 to 200 MXN, about 6 to 12 USD

Individual pastries and loavesNot published

Gluten-free and keto baking costs more to produce than ordinary baking, and Orquídea prices accordingly. Against Condesa in general it sits in the middle: more than a neighbourhood panadería, less than the hotel breakfast rooms a few streets away. Prices move, so treat this as a guide.

How to visit

There is nothing to book. A few things worth knowing:

  • The café opens early, from 07:00 on weekdays by most listings, and stays open until about 21:00.
  • Peak hours are mid-morning on a weekday and most of a weekend morning. Tables go first.
  • There is wifi, and the place is used as a laptop office, but a small room fills quickly.
  • Outdoor seating faces the avenue and is the better half of the café in dry weather.
  • Ask about shared surfaces if you are coeliac rather than gluten-avoiding.

Getting there

  • Address: Avenida Ámsterdam 147, Colonia Hipódromo, Cuauhtémoc, 06100 Mexico City. One older listing gives 146.
  • The street: Ámsterdam is the oval avenue that follows the outline of the old Hipódromo de la Condesa racetrack, with a planted walking median running its full length. Orquídea sits on the loop under the trees.
  • Metro: Chilpancingo on Line 9 is about a ten minute walk. Patriotismo, also on Line 9, is a similar distance.
  • Metrobús: Línea 1 stops at Sonora and at Campeche, both within ten minutes.
  • On foot: about five minutes from Parque México, which is the landmark to aim for.
  • Parking: street parking in Hipódromo is metered and competitive. Walk or take a taxi app.

Before you go

  • Come for the baking, not just the coffee. Plenty of Condesa cafés pour good espresso. Very few bake like this.
  • Go early. The 07:00 opening is the quietest and best hour of the day here.
  • Sit outside. The Ámsterdam canopy is the whole point of the location.
  • Bring a laptop only off peak. Mid-morning there is nowhere to put it.
  • Combine it with a lap of the loop. Ámsterdam is a full circuit of about 1.6 kilometres, and the protein waffle exists for exactly that reason.
  • Pair it with an afternoon nearby. Club Sorbet is a few streets away on Michoacán and picks up where a morning café leaves off.
  • Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Orquídea Café in Mexico City?+

Orquídea Café is on Avenida Ámsterdam in Colonia Hipódromo, the inner part of the Condesa area of Mexico City. Listings give the number as 147, with one older source giving 146, so look for the shopfront under the trees rather than counting doors. It is a few minutes' walk from Parque México.

Is Orquídea Café really gluten free?+

Gluten-free baking is the reason Orquídea exists rather than an afterthought, and the café is listed on dedicated gluten-free directories. The pastry case runs gluten-free banana bread, cookies, muffins and cakes, much of it also sugar free or built to keto ratios. If you are coeliac rather than avoiding gluten by preference, ask about shared surfaces, because the café does not publish a cross-contamination policy.

What coffee does Orquídea serve?+

Orquídea serves specialty coffee roasted by Pare de Dormir, a Mexican roaster. The drinks list covers the standards plus cacao latte, chai latte and matcha, and any of them can be made with oat, almond, macadamia, rice, coconut or soy milk. That range of milk alternatives is unusual even for Condesa.

How much does Orquídea Café cost?+

Orquídea does not publish a full price list, and listings put a typical visit at roughly 100 to 200 MXN, about 6 to 12 USD, for a coffee and something from the pastry case. A full breakfast plate costs more. Gluten-free and keto baking is more expensive to make than the standard kind, and the prices reflect that. Confirm at the counter, since prices move.

What are Orquídea Café's opening hours?+

Listings give Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 21:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 to 21:00, with one source giving 07:00 every day. Either way Orquídea is an early opener and stays open into the evening, which is rare for a café in Condesa. Check the current posted hours before a long trip.

Can you work from a laptop at Orquídea?+

Yes, and a lot of people do. Orquídea has wifi, indoor tables and an outdoor seating area on Ámsterdam, and the early opening makes it a workable morning office. It gets crowded at peak hours, roughly 10:00 to 13:00 on a weekday and most of a weekend morning, so arrive early if you need a table with a plug.

Is there anything vegan at Orquídea?+

Yes. Orquídea bakes vegan cookies using avocado oil instead of butter, every coffee can be made with one of six plant milks, and parts of the breakfast menu, such as avocado toast and green juice, are vegan as served. The pastry case is not entirely vegan, so check each item.

What should I order at Orquídea Café?+

The gluten-free banana bread is the item most often named, alongside the cacao latte and the waffles with berries and granola. There is also a protein waffle, which is why the café fills with people coming off a run around Parque México. Ask what came out of the oven that morning, because the case turns over daily.
