What Luna Rooftop is
Luna Rooftop is the rooftop bar and restaurant of the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, a five-storey hotel at Nemesio Diez 11 in the Zona Centro of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. It is an open terrace with lounge seating, umbrellas and roofed sections without walls, and it is the best-known sunset address in a town full of rooftops.
The view is the product. Luna looks across the tiled roofs of the centre at La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the pink neo-Gothic parish church that everyone photographs. Because the hotel sits a few blocks back from the main square, you get the whole church in its setting rather than a close-up of the spires, which is the opposite of what the terraces on the square itself give you.
It is a public bar. You do not need to be staying at the Rosewood to come up, and plenty of the tables on any given evening belong to people who walked in off the street. It is also, consistently, one of the more expensive places in San Miguel to have a drink.
Who is behind it
Luna belongs to the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, which opened in 2011 and remains one of the town’s landmark hotels. The property is listed in 50 Best Discovery, the directory published by The World’s 50 Best.
The kitchen sits under the hotel’s culinary direction, led by chef OdĂn Rocha, who oversees the Rosewood’s dining and opened Pirules Garden Kitchen in the hotel gardens in September 2024. Luna’s brief is narrower than that restaurant’s: Mediterranean cooking rebuilt with Mexican ingredients, in a format designed for sharing over drinks rather than for a sit-down dinner in courses.
Press and reputation
- The Rosewood San Miguel de Allende opened in 2011 and is listed in 50 Best Discovery.
- Chef OdĂn Rocha leads the hotel’s culinary direction and opened Pirules Garden Kitchen there in September 2024.
- Luna Rooftop holds around 4.5 out of 5 across roughly 1,650 Google reviews and 1,800 Tripadvisor reviews, with the view praised almost universally and the prices the most common complaint.
- No Michelin recognition, for a structural reason rather than a culinary one: the Michelin Guide Mexico does not cover the state of Guanajuato.
How a visit works
You enter through the Rosewood lobby and go up to the roof. There is no cover charge and no ticket.
- The menu: cold and warm tapas, salads, pasta, pizza and tacos, Mediterranean in structure and Mexican in its ingredients. Patatas bravas, octopus, hummus, coconut shrimp and shrimp tacos are the dishes reviewers name most often.
- The drinks: an artisanal cocktail list, a long tequila and mezcal selection, wine and beer. This is what most people are here for.
- Seating: lounge chairs and low tables as well as dining tables. The ones facing the church go first.
- Music: a DJ on Thursdays from 18:00 to 21:00 and live music on Saturdays from 14:00 to 16:00.
- Hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00, Monday from 14:00, closing at 23:00 on the hotel’s own listing and at 22:00 on several others.
What I found when I filmed
Two things stood out. The first is that the terrace really does look straight at La Parroquia, and at golden hour the church turns the colour everyone comes for. The second is that the food and the service hold up rather than coasting on the view, which is not the norm at scenic bars: Mediterranean tapas made with local ingredients, cocktails that are properly made, and staff who work the room well. You do not have to be a hotel guest. You do need to plan around sunset, because it fills fast.
What it costs
Prices are in Mexican pesos and move with the season.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Typical spend per person | 350 to 1,000 MXN, about 20 to 55 USD |
| Cocktails | Reported around 350 MXN each |
| Two cocktails and a bottle of water | Close to 1,000 MXN in one recent account |
This is the top price band in San Miguel de Allende, and the gap between Luna and a good local bar is real. The honest framing is that you are buying a seat at the best-known view in town for the hour when it is at its best. If you want the same skyline at a lower bill, the terraces around the JardĂn cost less and show you less.
Do you need a reservation
Yes if you can get one, and the policy is worth checking rather than assuming.
- The hotel’s own dining page takes reservations through SevenRooms and by phone on +52 415 152 9700.
- Answers posted under the hotel’s Tripadvisor listing say reservations are made for registered hotel guests, with non-guests seated first come, first served, and that the waiting list gets long at weekends, on long weekends and in high season.
- The reliable approach is to call the hotel, ask what they can hold for a non-guest on the date you want, and if the answer is nothing, arrive at least an hour before sunset.
Getting there
- Address: Nemesio Diez 11, Zona Centro, 37700 San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, at the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende.
- From the JardĂn Principal: about a ten minute walk, downhill on the way and uphill on the way back, on cobbles the whole way.
- Access: through the hotel lobby and up to the roof. Say you are going to Luna.
- Parking: valet parking is offered at the hotel for a fee, which is the easiest option in a centre of narrow one-way streets.
- Taxis: easy to get to, and worth arranging for the return if you are in heels on cobblestones after dark.
Before you go
- Time it around sunset, not after it. An hour before the light goes is the right arrival.
- Bring a jacket. At around 1,900 metres the temperature drops fast once the sun is down.
- Decide in advance whether this is drinks or dinner. The tapas format works for both, but the bill behaves very differently.
- Check for private events. A rooftop this photogenic gets booked out for weddings and parties, especially at weekends.
- Pair it with the closer view. For a terrace where the Parroquia is at eye level rather than across the rooftops, Atrio is beside the church itself and works better for a full dinner.
- Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions
Can you go to Luna Rooftop if you are not staying at the Rosewood?+
Yes. Luna Rooftop is open to the public, not only to hotel guests, and you walk in through the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende lobby at Nemesio Diez 11 and take the lift to the roof. The catch is seating at peak times: some answers from the hotel say reservations are held for registered guests and non-guests are seated first come, first served. Call +52 415 152 9700 and ask before you plan a sunset around it.
What are Luna Rooftop's opening hours?+
The Rosewood lists Luna Rooftop as open Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 23:00 and Mondays from 14:00 to 23:00. Several third-party listings show a 22:00 close instead, and a few show Monday opening at 14:00 across the board. Hours shift with the season and with private events, so confirm on the day if you are coming late.
How much does Luna Rooftop cost?+
Listings put the typical spend at Luna Rooftop between 350 and 1,000 MXN per person, roughly 20 to 55 US dollars, depending on whether you have a drink or a full meal. Cocktails have been reported around 350 MXN and one reviewer records two cocktails and a bottle of water reaching close to 1,000 MXN. It is the expensive end of San Miguel drinking, and the view is what you are paying for.
Does Luna Rooftop have a view of La Parroquia?+
Yes. Luna Rooftop looks across the San Miguel de Allende rooftops straight at La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the pink parish church. Because the Rosewood sits a few blocks back from the JardĂn, you see the whole church and the town around it rather than the spires up close. Golden hour is when it glows, which is why that slot fills first.
What food does Luna Rooftop serve?+
Luna Rooftop serves a Mediterranean-inspired menu built on Mexican ingredients, split between cold and warm tapas, salads, pasta, pizza and tacos, plus a cocktail list and a long tequila and mezcal selection. Dishes that come up repeatedly include patatas bravas, octopus, hummus, coconut shrimp and shrimp tacos. There are vegetarian options on the tapas side.
What time should I arrive at Luna Rooftop for sunset?+
Arrive at least an hour before sunset, and earlier at weekends and in high season. Luna Rooftop is the best-known sunset terrace in San Miguel de Allende and the tables facing La Parroquia are claimed long before the light turns. If you arrive after the sun is down, you will usually still get a seat, just not the one in the photographs.
Is there a dress code at Luna Rooftop?+
There is no strict dress code and casual clothing is accepted at Luna Rooftop, but this is the rooftop of a Rosewood hotel and most tables dress smart casual in the evening. The more practical advice is a layer: San Miguel de Allende sits at around 1,900 metres and the terrace gets cold once the sun goes.
Where exactly is Luna Rooftop in San Miguel de Allende?+
Luna Rooftop is on top of the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende at Nemesio Diez 11, Zona Centro, 37700 San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. It is about a ten minute walk from the JardĂn Principal, downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back over cobbles. The hotel offers valet parking for a fee if you drive.
