Michelin restaurants in
Oaxaca

Which Michelin Guide tables in Oaxaca are worth booking? One star, a Bib Gourmand, a Selected table and a Guide hotel, and what each distinction actually means, every one of them eaten at and filmed on my own visit.

The four

A star, a Bib Gourmand, a selection and a hotel selection are four different things. Most lists online call all of them Michelin restaurants; only one of these is starred.

For the star

Levadura de Olla

Centro◆Fine dining◆Mexican◆$$$ ◆Michelin◆Michelin Star

One Michelin Star in every Michelin Guide Mexico since 2024. Chef Thalía Barrios García cooks the food of San Mateo Yucutindoó in a colonial courtyard on García Vigil, with corn, beans, squash and tomatoes her own team sows. The seven-course menu with three drinks is 1,810 pesos; the à la carte runs 190 to 490.

The cheapest star you will ever eat at. Seatings are Tuesday to Saturday at 1, 4 and 7, booked on their own site.

For the Bib for breakfast

Xaok

Centro◆Fine dining◆Mexican◆$$$ ◆Michelin◆Bib Gourmand

A Bib Gourmand in 2025 and 2026 for chef Uriel García's contemporary Oaxacan cooking in Ex-Marquezado, with a small tree-shaded patio and a seasonal breakfast menu. A Bib means good cooking at a moderate price, and this is the clearest example of it in the city.

Breakfast is Thursday to Sunday mornings only. Dinner books online, and it is pet friendly.

For the selection worth the drive

Alfonsina

Oaxaca◆Fine dining◆Mexican◆$$$ ◆Michelin

In the Michelin Guide Mexico 2026 selection, without a star or a Bib: a five-course menu cooked by chef Jorge León, formerly of Pujol, and his mother Doña Elvia in their own garden, forty minutes from the city. One fixed dinner at 1,150 pesos, reservation only.

Closed Tuesdays. Bring repellent and long sleeves, since nothing chemical is used on the grounds.

For the Guide hotel

Otro Oaxaca (Otro Sabor)

Centro◆Hotel◆Mexican◆$$$ ◆Michelin Guide hotel

Grupo Habita's sixteen-room design hotel across from Santo Domingo appears in the Michelin Guide's hotel selection, the curated list of places to stay. That is not a restaurant award, but its restaurant Otro Sabor is open to everyone for breakfast from 7:15.

Not a guest? The rooftop infinity pool facing Santo Domingo sells a day pass for 1,000 pesos, noon to five.

How I picked

Why four, and not forty

Almost every list online calls everything Michelin in Oaxaca a Michelin restaurant, and almost every one gets the distinctions wrong. These four are the Guide's entries I ate at and filmed, each labelled with exactly what it holds.

Questions

Before you go out

How many Michelin-starred restaurants are in Oaxaca?+

On this list, one: Levadura de Olla, which has held One Michelin Star in every Michelin Guide Mexico since 2024. Xaok holds a Bib Gourmand, a different award for good cooking at moderate prices, not a step below a star. Alfonsina is in the selection, which means the inspectors recommend it without a star or a Bib.

What is the difference between a Michelin star and a Bib Gourmand?+

A star rates the cooking at the highest level the inspectors judge. A Bib Gourmand recognises good cooking at a moderate price. They are separate distinctions with different purposes, so a Bib restaurant is not a nearly-starred one. A selected restaurant, like Alfonsina, is recommended by the Guide without either.

Is Otro Oaxaca a Michelin restaurant?+

No. Otro Oaxaca is in the Michelin Guide's hotel selection, which recognises places to stay. Its restaurant Otro Sabor is open to everyone, but the Michelin mention belongs to the hotel.

How much does Levadura de Olla cost?+

The seven-course menu with three drinks is 1,810 pesos, about 100 US dollars, and à la carte dishes run 190 to 490 pesos. That makes it one of the most affordable starred kitchens anywhere. Prices were current when I filmed.

Do I need to book these restaurants?+

Levadura de Olla, yes, through its own site, and Alfonsina is reservation only. Xaok's dinner books online, and its weekend breakfast is easier to walk into. Otro Sabor's breakfast is open to anyone.

Which Michelin restaurant in Oaxaca is best for a first visit?+

Levadura de Olla, because it is the star, it is in the centro, and the à la carte lets you try it without committing to the full menu. Add Xaok for a weekend breakfast and Alfonsina if you have an evening and a car.
