What Alfonsina is
Alfonsina is a small tasting-menu restaurant in the garden of a family home in San Juan Bautista La Raya, a village on the southern edge of the Oaxaca Valley. It opened in 2018 and is run by chef Jorge León and his mother, Elvia León Hernández, known to everyone as Doña Elvia. The restaurant is named after the family grandmother.
There is no sign on the street and no printed menu. A handful of wooden tables sit under trees, tortillas are pressed by hand a few steps away, and the courses arrive in the order the family decides that day. Since 2024 it has held a Bib Gourmand in the Michelin Guide Mexico, the guide’s category for excellent cooking at a fair price.
Who cooks here
Jorge León grew up in this house and started in restaurants as a teenage dishwasher at Casa Oaxaca. Enrique Olvera later brought him to Pujol in Mexico City, where he spent about six years in charge of the masa and the moles, the two things Pujol is known for. He helped shape the vegan mole negro there using his family recipe and worked on the openings of Cosme in New York, Manta in Los Cabos and Molino El Pujol in Mexico City before coming home.
Doña Elvia runs the comal. She makes the tortillas, memelas, tamales and molotes and is the reason the food tastes like a Oaxacan family table rather than a tasting menu that imitates one.
Awards and TV appearances
- Michelin Guide Mexico: Bib Gourmand in the first edition (2024), kept in the 2025 selection.
- New Worlder: Restaurant of the Year 2018.
- Listed in 50 Best Discovery, the directory of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
- Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, season 3, Holy Mole Mexico (National Geographic, 2021): Jorge teaches Ramsay to make the family mole. Ramsay called the mole “magic in a jar”.
- Somebody Feed Phil, season 5, Oaxaca (Netflix, 2022): Phil Rosenthal eats at the family table.
How the menu works
Alfonsina serves a fixed five-course menu that changes every day. Jorge shops at the Central de Abastos market and works with local growers, fishers and artisans, so the menu follows the season rather than a signature list.
- Lunch: à la carte dishes or the five-course menu, built mostly around vegetables.
- Dinner: the five-course menu only.
- Your choice: the main course comes as meat, fish or vegetarian. The kitchen asks about restrictions before service.
- Always on the table: handmade tortillas from corn milled in house, and at least one mole.
What I ate in August
August is mushroom season in the Oaxaca hills, so wild mushrooms ran through the starters. The meal went like this:
- A large taco of greens with a house salsa, served on a fresh tortilla.
- A chickpea soup, simple and warming, the kind of dish that tastes like someone’s childhood.
- A tamal steamed in banana leaf with green salsa and vegetables.
- Jurel, a local jack mackerel that looks like tuna, roasted over an open fire and served with a peanut mole.
- Mamey purée with roasted plums, gently sweet.
- A digestive tea of garden herbs to finish.
The dishes above are one August evening. Expect different plates on your visit.
What it costs
Prices are quoted in Mexican pesos and move with the season. In August 2026 the dinner menu was:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Five-course dinner menu, per person | 1,150 MXN, about 60 USD |
| Drinks | Charged separately |
Drinks include Mexican wines, mezcal from small family producers, pulque, craft beer on tap and a house drink of the day. Lunch is priced lower than dinner and the à la carte option lets you spend less. Blog reports from 2022 to 2024 quote 400 to 800 pesos per person, so budget for the current figure rather than older articles and confirm when you book.
How to book
Reservations are required. The garden holds roughly a dozen guests per seating.
- OpenTable: search for Alfonsina, San Juan Bautista La Raya.
- WhatsApp or phone: +52 951 204 8137.
- Email: reservas@alfonsina.mx.
Seatings listed by the restaurant are 13:30, 14:00, 14:30 and 15:00 for lunch and 17:00, 18:00 and 19:00 for dinner. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. In high season, November to March, book one to two weeks ahead; the rest of the year a few days is usually enough.
Getting there
- Address: Calle García Vigil 183, San Juan Bautista La Raya, Oaxaca 71232, Mexico.
- From Oaxaca city centre: 30 to 40 minutes by taxi or rental car.
- From Oaxaca airport (OAX): 10 to 20 minutes, which makes it a practical last meal before a flight.
- Public transport: none that is direct.
- Navigation: map apps often lose the last few unpaved streets. Ask in the village for “el restaurante de Jorge” and the staff will call a taxi for the way back.
Before you go
- Bring repellent and long sleeves. The family uses no chemical sprays on the property and burns herbs against mosquitoes, which helps but does not solve it. Dinner in the rainy season is the buggiest.
- Dress for a garden, not a dining room. Wooden tables, no tablecloths, no uniforms.
- Plan two to three hours. Courses arrive at a family pace.
- Low waste by design. The restaurant runs dry composting toilets, collects rainwater, filters greywater and avoids plastic packaging. Expect the setting to match.
- Pair it with Levadura de Olla. If you want to compare the two ways Oaxaca cooks mole today, Alfonsina is the home kitchen and Levadura de Olla, in the city centre, is the starred casona. See my Levadura de Olla review for that side.
- Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions
Is Alfonsina a Michelin star restaurant?+
No. Alfonsina holds a Bib Gourmand, the Michelin Guide distinction for very good food at a moderate price. It received it in the first Michelin Guide Mexico in 2024 and kept it in the 2025 selection. The two Oaxaca restaurants with a star are Levadura de Olla and Los Danzantes.
How much does dinner at Alfonsina cost?+
When I went in August 2026 the five-course dinner menu was 1,150 MXN per person, roughly 60 USD, with drinks charged separately. Lunch has a fixed menu and an à la carte option, and prices move with the season, so confirm when you book.
Do I need a reservation?+
Yes. The garden seats only a dozen or so guests per seating and walk-ins are not the norm. Book through OpenTable, by WhatsApp at +52 951 204 8137, or by email at reservas@alfonsina.mx. In high season, November to March, book one to two weeks ahead.
What days is Alfonsina open?+
Wednesday to Monday for lunch and dinner. It is closed on Tuesdays. The restaurant lists lunch seatings between 13:30 and 15:00 and dinner seatings at 17:00, 18:00 and 19:00.
Where is Alfonsina and how do I get there?+
Calle García Vigil 183, San Juan Bautista La Raya, Oaxaca 71232. It is about 30 to 40 minutes south of the Oaxaca city centre by taxi or car, and about 10 to 20 minutes from Oaxaca airport. There is no direct public transport. GPS often gets the last stretch wrong, so ask a local, and the staff will call a taxi for your return.
Is there a vegetarian menu?+
Yes. The fixed menu is offered with a choice of meat, fish or vegetarian main, and the kitchen asks about dietary restrictions before serving. Lunch is built around vegetables to begin with.
Which TV shows featured Alfonsina?+
Jorge León taught Gordon Ramsay to make mole in the Oaxaca episode of Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted (season 3, Holy Mole Mexico, 2021). The restaurant also appears in the Oaxaca episode of Somebody Feed Phil (season 5, 2022) on Netflix.
Should I bring mosquito repellent?+
Yes. You eat outdoors in a garden that uses no chemical sprays, and the herb smoke the family burns does not keep every mosquito away. Long sleeves and repellent make the evening seating far more comfortable, especially in the rainy months.
