What Pez Gallo is
Pez Gallo is a beachfront restaurant on Playa Bacocho, at the northwestern end of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. It sits on the terrace of the beach club reached by the Camino a Playa Bacocho in Fraccionamiento Bacocho, above the sand rather than on it, and it serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails to anyone who walks in.
The distinction that matters here is the format. Most beachfront eating in Puerto Escondido happens in a palapa with plastic chairs and sand underfoot. Pez Gallo is a built terrace with a roof, railings and table service, run with hotel staffing, looking straight out at the ocean. That is the reason it works as a breakfast address rather than only a beer-and-ceviche stop.
Listings are inconsistent about which club it belongs to. Some file the restaurant under Club de Playa Villasol, run by Hotel Suite Villasol, and some under Club Bacocho. The restaurant’s own name is the reliable search term. Whichever gate you arrive at, the restaurant is open to the public during its posted hours and the pools are the part you pay extra for.
Who is behind it
Pez Gallo is run as the restaurant of a beach club rather than as a chef-driven project, which is why the service and the scale feel like a hotel rather than an owner-operated dining room. The kitchen describes its cooking as the food of the Pacific coast: typical dishes of the southern coast alongside plates from other parts of Mexico adapted to local fish and produce. It has been on Playa Bacocho long enough to accumulate more than two thousand Google reviews at a 4.8 average, which in a town with nearly a thousand restaurants makes it one of the steadiest names in the Bacocho district.
How the menu works
The day is split. Breakfast runs 08:00 to 12:00 and is the reason most visitors come. It is a long card rather than a short one, and it divides into three parts.
- Mexican classics: the standard coastal breakfast repertoire, eggs and salsas and the rest.
- The light section: oatmeal, fruit with granola, sourdough avocado toast.
- The sweet and inventive end: spinach crepes, hot cakes with caramelised banana.
After midday the kitchen turns to Pacific coast cooking: ceviches including a campechano, fish tacos, octopus, whole fresh fish, seafood casseroles and a burger for anyone who has had enough seafood. There is a full cocktail list, and the club side runs a happy hour in the early afternoon. Vegetarians are catered for at breakfast more comfortably than at dinner.
What I ate
I went for the breakfast, which is what I would come back for. The menu is close to endless, and the combination that stood out was the light section against the creative one: sourdough avocado toast and oatmeal on one side, spinach crepes and hot cakes with caramelised banana on the other. Everything I ordered came in under ten US dollars a plate. The view from the terrace is the other half of the order, and at eight in the morning there is almost nobody else using it.
What it costs
Prices are in Mexican pesos and were current in the summer of 2026.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Most breakfast and main dishes | 90 to 190 MXN, about 5 to 10 USD |
| Typical spend per person with a drink | 200 to 300 MXN, about 11 to 17 USD |
| Beach club day pass, pools and loungers | Around 1,600 MXN in 2025, part returned as food credit |
That makes the restaurant itself inexpensive by Puerto Escondido standards, roughly what a good cafe in La Punta charges for a breakfast plate, with a far better view. The day pass is the expensive part of the address, so decide in advance whether you want a meal or a pool day. Prices move with the season, so confirm at the table.
Do you need a reservation
For breakfast and ordinary lunches, no. Walk in. For weekends in high season, for a group of six or more, or if you want a specific table at the front rail, call +52 954 582 0061 first. The simplest solution is to arrive at opening: at 08:00 the terrace is effectively empty and the front tables are free.
Getting there
- Address: Camino a Playa Bacocho, Fraccionamiento Bacocho, Bacocho, 71983 Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.
- Neighbourhood: Bacocho, the quiet residential fraccionamiento at the northwestern end of town, well away from the Zicatela surf strip.
- From the centre and the Adoquín: about 10 minutes by taxi or mototaxi.
- From Zicatela or La Punta: 15 to 25 minutes by taxi depending on traffic on the coastal road.
- From Puerto Escondido airport (PXM): under 10 minutes. Bacocho is the closest neighbourhood to the runway, which makes this a practical first or last meal of a trip.
- Parking: available at the beach club, which is not the case at most beachfront restaurants here.
Before you go
- Do not swim at Bacocho. It looks gentler than Zicatela, but it has heavy surf and a strong undertow and is one of the beaches lifeguards warn about. Carrizalillo and Puerto Angelito are the swimming beaches.
- Go at eight. The terrace is quiet, the light is good and the heat has not arrived.
- Check the hours before a late visit. Most listings say 08:00 to 20:00 daily, but some show a 19:00 close and a shorter Wednesday.
- Stay for the turtle release. The Vive Mar camp releases hatchlings on Playa Bacocho at around 17:00, for a small donation, and it is a short walk from the tables. Arrive early, because the number of turtles is limited.
- Pair it with the other end of town. For dinner after a Bacocho morning, Almoraduz in the centre and Chicama are both a short taxi away.
- Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions
What time does breakfast start at Pez Gallo?+
Breakfast at Pez Gallo runs from 08:00 to 12:00 every day. The restaurant opens before the pools and loungers of the beach club do, so an early breakfast on the terrace is the quietest way to use the place. The kitchen then carries on with lunch and dinner service until evening.
How much does breakfast at Pez Gallo cost?+
Most dishes on the Pez Gallo breakfast card were 90 to 190 MXN when I filmed in the summer of 2026, which is roughly 5 to 10 US dollars a plate. With coffee and juice, a full breakfast lands near 200 to 300 MXN per person, about 11 to 17 dollars. Prices move, so treat this as a guide.
Where exactly is Pez Gallo in Puerto Escondido?+
Pez Gallo is on Playa Bacocho, at the beach club reached by the Camino a Playa Bacocho in Fraccionamiento Bacocho, 71983 Puerto Escondido. Bacocho is the quiet residential district northwest of the centre, roughly ten minutes by taxi from the Adoquín and close to Puerto Escondido airport. Search for Restaurante Pez Gallo rather than a beach club name, because listings disagree about which club it belongs to.
Do I have to pay for a beach club day pass to eat at Pez Gallo?+
No. Pez Gallo functions as a public restaurant during its posted hours, and you can arrive for breakfast or lunch and pay only for what you eat. The pools, loungers and swim-up bar of the beach club are a separate paid product, quoted at around 1,600 MXN per person in 2025 with part of that returned as food and drink credit. Confirm the current pass at the gate if you want the pool.
Can you swim at Playa Bacocho?+
Not safely. Playa Bacocho looks calm and uncrowded next to Zicatela, but it has strong waves and a powerful undertow and is regularly listed among the most dangerous beaches in Puerto Escondido for swimming. Treat Pez Gallo as a place to look at the ocean, and swim at Carrizalillo or Puerto Angelito instead.
What should I order at Pez Gallo?+
At breakfast the menu splits three ways: Mexican classics, a light section with oatmeal, fruit with granola and sourdough avocado toast, and the sweet and inventive end with spinach crepes and hot cakes with caramelised banana. Later in the day Pez Gallo turns to Pacific coast cooking, with ceviches, fish tacos, whole fresh fish and seafood casseroles.
Is Pez Gallo good for families?+
Yes. Pez Gallo is a raised terrace with table service, shade and railings rather than tables on open sand, which makes it easier with small children than most beachfront places in Puerto Escondido. The breakfast menu has plain options, and the beach club side has a children's pool if you buy the day pass. Keep children out of the water at Bacocho itself.
Do I need a reservation at Pez Gallo?+
Not for breakfast or a normal lunch, when walking in is the norm. Pez Gallo is one of the most reviewed restaurants in Puerto Escondido and fills at weekends and in high season, so call +52 954 582 0061 if you are a group of six or more or want a particular table. Arriving before nine in the morning gets you the front rail without asking.
