The breakfast package is 280 pesos per person: pastry, juice, unlimited coffee and a main dish from Mexican and local options like chilaquiles, or classics like omelet and avocado toast. Rooms can pick up some road noise, but not until late. A good stop for a quick weekend trip.

What Hotel Altamonte is

Hotel Altamonte is a 12-suite boutique hotel in the centre of Bernal, the Pueblo Mágico an hour outside Querétaro city that exists because of the rock behind it. It sits on Calle Ezequiel Montes, a few steps from the main square and about two kilometres from the base of the Peña de Bernal.

It is a new build rather than a restored casona, and it reads that way: clean lines, pale stone, design-led rooms, nothing pretending to be three hundred years old. The suites are named after plants and features of the surrounding semi-desert, from Garambullo and Biznaga to Mezquite and Huizache, which is the most local thing about the decor.

The reason to book it rather than any of the cheaper guesthouses in the village is the terrace. It faces the Peña head-on, at a height that puts the whole monolith in view, and it is where the hotel serves breakfast. Two terraces are linked by a bridge that the hotel uses for events and photographs. Standing on it at dusk, when the rock is lit, is the closest thing Bernal has to a free show.

Who is behind it

The hotel is independently run and small enough that the front desk does most things itself, including calling taxis and arranging transport to its affiliated property. It is linked to Hotel Montebello, a larger hotel about 15 km away, which is where Altamonte guests go for a pool and for the Sunday buffet breakfast. The two operate as a pair, and Altamonte includes transport to Montebello when you use those facilities. The hotel does not publish an owner or designer name, so treat any attribution you read elsewhere with suspicion.

How breakfast works

Breakfast is not bundled into the room rate. It is sold as a fixed package, served à la carte on the terrace, and it is the part of the hotel most worth paying for.

  • The package: 280 MXN per person, which covers a pastry, a juice, unlimited coffee and one main dish.
  • The mains: a choice between Mexican and local plates such as chilaquiles, and international standards such as an omelette or avocado toast.
  • Where: the terrace facing the Peña, which is the whole point of eating here rather than walking to the square.
  • Sundays: guests can instead take the buffet at Hotel Montebello, with transport included.

What I ate

Chilaquiles off the Mexican side of the list, with the pastry, the juice and the coffee that come with the package, eaten on the terrace with the monolith filling the view. One honest caveat: there is no real espresso machine, so the unlimited coffee is filter and café de olla rather than anything a barista made. If good coffee matters more to you than the view, eat here anyway and get a proper cup in the village afterwards.

What it costs

Figures below are what I recorded when I filmed, in Mexican pesos.

ItemPrice
Room, per nightAround 2,000 MXN, about 105 USD
Breakfast package, per person280 MXN, about 15 USD
Pets400 MXN per pet per night
Late checkout, 12:30 to 16:00One third of the nightly rate
Late checkout, 16:00 to 18:00Two thirds of the nightly rate

Two thousand pesos a night puts Altamonte in the middle of the Bernal market: above the village guesthouses, below the country estates out on the Tequisquiapan road. Weekends and long weekends are the expensive dates because Bernal is a two-day destination for Mexico City and Querétaro, and midweek is noticeably cheaper. Some booking sites quote breakfast at 260 pesos rather than 280, so confirm the figure when you arrive rather than budgeting from an aggregator.

How to book

  • The hotel’s own site: altamontehotel.com, which runs on the Cloudbeds booking system.
  • WhatsApp or phone: +52 441 115 1743.
  • Email: altamontehotel@gmail.com.
  • Instagram: @altamontehotel.
  • Aggregators: Booking.com, Expedia, Hoteles.com and Agoda all list it, usually as Altamonte Hotel Boutique.

Book direct if you want a specific suite or you are bringing a pet, since there are only twelve rooms and the configurations differ. Say when you book if you want a room away from the road. Late checkout is available on request and charged on a sliding scale, and it is worth asking about on a Sunday.

Getting there

  • Address: Calle Ezequiel Montes 13, Centro, Bernal, Querétaro 76680, Mexico.
  • From Querétaro city: about one hour by car, via Ezequiel Montes.
  • From Mexico City: roughly two and a half to three hours.
  • From Querétaro international airport: about 30 km, and the hotel can arrange airport transport.
  • Parking: private and secure at the hotel.
  • Without a car: buses run from Querétaro to Bernal and drop you in the centre, a short walk away.

Before you go

  • Ask for a quiet room. The road beside the hotel carries noise into some suites in the evening. It quietens down before it gets late, but it is the one real complaint worth raising at booking.
  • Book the terrace for breakfast, not the room. The view is on the roof, not out of the windows.
  • Coffee expectations. Unlimited, but filter and café de olla, not espresso.
  • The rock is a morning job. The climb to the viewpoint is steep and exposed, and Bernal bakes by midday. Go early and eat afterwards.
  • Make it a wine and cheese weekend. Bernal sits on Querétaro’s Ruta del Vino y el Queso. Tinto y Roca is the grill house at the foot of the Peña for dinner, Cava Bocanegra in Tequisquiapan is the easy cheese and wine afternoon, and Ruinas is the vineyard restaurant at Puerta del Lobo.
  • Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions

What is Hotel Altamonte?+

Hotel Altamonte is a small boutique hotel in the centre of Bernal, the Pueblo Mágico in Querétaro state built around the Peña de Bernal monolith. It has 12 suites and a terrace looking at the rock, and it is a few steps from the main square. The style is new and design-led rather than colonial.

How much does a room at Hotel Altamonte cost?+

Rates were around 2,000 MXN per night, roughly 105 US dollars, when I filmed. Breakfast is not included and is sold as a separate 280-peso package. Rates in Bernal rise sharply for weekends and holidays, so check the hotel's own booking page for your dates.

Is breakfast included at Hotel Altamonte?+

No, it is charged separately. The breakfast package at Hotel Altamonte was 280 MXN per person and includes a pastry, a juice, unlimited coffee and one main dish chosen from Mexican and local options such as chilaquiles, or classics like an omelette or avocado toast. Some booking listings quote 260 pesos, so confirm the figure at check-in.

Does Hotel Altamonte have a view of the Peña de Bernal?+

Yes. The terrace faces the monolith directly and is the best thing about the property, which is why breakfast up there is worth booking. The hotel also lights the terrace for events, and two terraces are linked by a bridge used for photos. Rooms look onto a patio or garden rather than the rock.

How many rooms does Hotel Altamonte have?+

Twelve suites, each named after a local plant or feature: Garambullo, Picacho, Peña, Encino, Guamiche, Huizache, Pitahaya, Biznaga, Mezquite, Cactus, Agave and Altamonte. Seven of them sleep two people and the rest take two to four. Rooms include a coffee maker, a flat-screen television, private bathroom and a patio.

Are the rooms at Hotel Altamonte noisy?+

Some rooms pick up noise from the road next to the hotel, which I noticed on my stay. It did not run late into the night, so it is an evening annoyance rather than a sleepless one. If you are sensitive to it, ask for a room away from the street when you book.

Is Hotel Altamonte pet friendly?+

Yes. Hotel Altamonte allows dogs and cats in the suites and the common areas for 400 MXN per pet per night, subject to its house rules. It is one of the few places in Bernal that says so plainly. Confirm when you reserve, since pet rooms are limited.

Is there a pool at Hotel Altamonte?+

Not on the property. Hotel Altamonte gives guests access to the pool at its affiliated Hotel Montebello, about 15 km away, and arranges transport if you ask at reception. Montebello also runs the Sunday breakfast buffet that Altamonte guests can use, with transport included.
