What Cava Bocanegra is

Cava Bocanegra is a cheese cellar you can visit, on the state road between Tequisquiapan and Querétaro. The cava is the working ageing cellar of Quesos Néole, dug five metres down so the temperature and humidity hold steady the way a natural cave would, and that is where the family’s mature cheeses sit on their racks.

What turns it into a day out is everything built on top. There is a tasting terrace, a big lawn with a fountain and covered seating, a kids’ area, a shop and a restaurant on the second floor. The model is simple: buy a cheese board and a bottle at the counter, take it out to the grass or the terrace, and stay there for a few hours. Guided tours of the cava run on the hour for anyone who wants the explanation rather than just the cheese.

It sits on the Ruta del Vino y el Queso, Querétaro’s cheese and wine route, and it is one of the easier stops on it: no reservation needed for the picnic part, big enough that a Saturday crowd does not ruin it, and close to Tequisquiapan if you want a village afterwards.

Who is behind it

Quesos Néole is a family business, and the family came from northern Italy. The name gives it away: Néole means cloud in Venetian, the language of the Véneto, which is where the founders’ people originated. They went into dairy cattle first and have more than fifty years in milk production behind them, then began making mature cheeses for sale in 2008, following traditional European recipes rather than the standard Mexican fresh-cheese playbook.

Bocanegra is their own cava, and the family describes it as a recreation of the natural conditions of the cave where they first started maturing cheese years ago. The range now covers cow, goat and sheep milk across different textures and ageing times, which is why the tasting can put six meaningfully different cheeses in front of you rather than six versions of the same idea.

How a visit works

There are two ways to do Cava Bocanegra, and they are priced separately.

  • Turn up and picnic: order a cheese board and drinks at the counter, take them to the lawn, the terrace or the covered seating. No booking needed.
  • The guided cava tour: a walk down into the cellar with a guide, an explanation of maturation and cheese styles, then a guided tasting of around six cheeses on the terrace with bread, olives, honey, fruit and ate. Tours leave on the hour, roughly 10:00 to 16:00, and take about 40 minutes to an hour.
  • The tour upgrades: the same tour with a beer, or with a glass of wine, mezcal or tequila, each priced higher than the classic.
  • The restaurant: second floor, comfort food, open every day except Tuesday.
  • The shop: cow, goat and sheep cheeses, olive oils, honeys and salsas to take home.

What I ate

The 280-peso board was the one I ordered, split three ways: three intense cheeses, two younger ones, bread, nuts, olives, vegetables and sausage. That is a genuinely generous amount of cheese for the money and enough to keep a table busy for a long, slow afternoon on the lawn. The restaurant upstairs is the other option if you want something hot, and the views from the second floor are the best on the property.

What it costs

Prices below were current when I filmed in September 2026, in Mexican pesos.

Two or three people can do the whole thing, board plus a bottle plus a tour each, for well under a thousand pesos a head, which makes Bocanegra one of the better value stops on the route. The venue also sells packaged experiences at a different level entirely: a three-hour couples picnic with a tipi, a board and sparkling rosé was 1,300 MXN per couple, and private events in the cava itself run into the thousands. Those need booking; the ordinary visit does not.

How to book

  • Website: cavabocanegra.com, which sells tours and experiences through the Peek system.
  • WhatsApp: the link is on the site.
  • Phone: +52 414 273 3369.
  • Email: quesosneole@gmail.com.
  • Instagram: @cavabocanegra.

Book the tour, not the lawn. If you want the packaged experiences, the couples picnic or a private cava event, those have fixed start times and small capacities, so book several days ahead for a weekend. Check the Tuesday detail before you plan a lunch, because the restaurant closes that day while the rest stays open.

Getting there

  • Address: Carretera Estatal 200 km 50, Fuentezuelas, 76780 Tequisquiapan, Querétaro, Mexico.
  • From Tequisquiapan centre: about 10 minutes by car.
  • From Querétaro city: about one hour.
  • From Mexico City: roughly two and a half to three hours.
  • Parking: on site.
  • Public transport: nothing practical. Drive, or take a taxi from Tequisquiapan and arrange the return.

Before you go

  • Dogs are not allowed on the tours. The venue lists itself as not pet friendly, so leave them at home even though it looks like a place that would take them.
  • Tuesdays, the kitchen is shut. The cava, shop and terrace still work, but there is no hot food.
  • Bring cash for the shop. The gourmet counter is where most people spend more than they planned.
  • Go in the morning for the tour, stay for the afternoon. Tours run from 10:00 and the lawn is best once the sun is off it.
  • Build it into the cheese and wine route. Finca VAI is the working dairy farm version with animals, Rancho Santa Marina is the goat cheese and farm-to-table one, and Ruinas at Puerta del Lobo is the wine end of it.
  • Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions

What is Cava Bocanegra?+

Cava Bocanegra is the ageing cellar of Quesos Néole, a family cheese dairy in Fuentezuelas, ten minutes outside Tequisquiapan in Querétaro. The cava itself sits five metres underground and is where the mature cheeses rest. Above it the property has a tasting terrace, a large lawn, a shop and a restaurant, and it is one of the anchor stops on the state's cheese and wine route.

How much does Cava Bocanegra cost?+

A cheese board was 280 MXN for three people, about 15 US dollars, and the larger board 440 MXN when I filmed. The guided cava tour starts at 260 MXN per person for the classic version, rising for the versions that come with beer, wine or mezcal. Children under five do not pay for the tour.

What does the cava tour include?+

The Cava Bocanegra tour is a guided walk down into the cellar with an explanation of how the cheeses are matured and what the different styles are, followed by a tasting on the terrace. The tasting runs to around six cheeses served with artisan bread, olives, honey, fruit and ate, a quince paste. The venue lists it at roughly 40 minutes to an hour, and tours leave every hour.

Do I need to book Cava Bocanegra in advance?+

For a cheese board and a table on the lawn, no, you can normally turn up. For the guided cava tour and the packaged experiences, yes, because tours run on the hour with limited places and weekends fill. Book through cavabocanegra.com, which uses the Peek system, or by WhatsApp on +52 414 273 3369.

Is Cava Bocanegra good for kids?+

Yes. There is a dedicated children's area, a large lawn to run on and a fountain, and children under five go free on the tour. That combination is the reason it works as a family day out rather than an adults-only tasting. Dogs, however, are not allowed on the tours.

Is there a restaurant at Cava Bocanegra?+

Yes, on the second floor, with views over the property. It serves comfort food rather than fine dining, with pizzas, pastas and burgers around 400 MXN when I filmed. Note that the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays even though the cava and shop stay open.

Who makes the cheese at Cava Bocanegra?+

Quesos Néole, a family business whose founders came from northern Italy. The family has been in dairy farming for more than fifty years and started making mature cheeses commercially in 2008. Néole means cloud in Venetian, the language of the Véneto region the family came from.

How do I get to Cava Bocanegra from Mexico City?+

Cava Bocanegra is at Carretera Estatal 200 km 50, Fuentezuelas, 76780 Tequisquiapan, Querétaro, roughly two and a half to three hours by car from Mexico City and about an hour from Querétaro city. It is ten minutes from the centre of Tequisquiapan. There is parking on site and no useful public transport, so drive or take a taxi from Tequis.
