The best burgers in
Mexico City

Where can you find a properly good burger in Mexico City? These three, from a 99-peso smash burger on the Cibeles roundabout to a wagyu burger in a Polanco garden, every one of them eaten and filmed on my own visit.

The three

Three burgers at three prices: under 100 pesos, a bistro plate, and wagyu. Pick by the occasion, not by the patty.

For the smash burger

Instinto Hamburguesas

Roma Norte◆Casual dinner◆Steak & grill◆$

Classic American smash burgers on the Cibeles roundabout from Carlos, an owner-cook with twelve years behind him who grinds ribeye and sirloin in house and bakes the brioche every day. The classic cheeseburger is 99 pesos; the crispy chicken comes with hot honey or with peanut butter and bacon jam.

The combo with fries and a house soda is 168 pesos. It is the best value meal in Roma Norte.

For the bistro burger

Biggie's

Colonia Juárez◆Casual dinner◆American◆$$$

A New York-style bistro in Colonia Juárez named after The Notorious B.I.G., where the burger comes in pepper sauce next to salads and baby potatoes with asparagus and feta. About 760 pesos a person for three plates with water and service.

Walk in for the terrace bar table, which they keep for people without a booking.

For the wagyu burger

Jardín Horacio

Polanco◆Restaurant◆Contemporary Mexican◆$$$

A garden restaurant on the first floor of Horacio 330 in Polanco with steaks from the coals, pastas and a wagyu burger. The burger to order when the rest of the table wants a proper dinner.

Add the coal-roasted cauliflower with tzatziki for the table, and save room for the Dubai chocolate strawberries.

How I picked

Why three, and not forty

Burger lists in Mexico City tend to be long and repetitive. This one is three burgers I ate and filmed, chosen because each wins at a different price and occasion.

More are being filmed. The guide will grow when they are as good as these, and not before.
