The best cafés to work from in
Mexico City

Which cafés in Mexico City can you actually work from? These six, judged on wifi, plugs, how long you can stay and how busy it gets, every one of them visited and filmed on my own visit.

The six

Every café here gets crowded somewhere between ten and one. The single best tip for working from a café in this city is to arrive before nine.

Testarudo Café

I

For the best for a full day

Testarudo Café

Colonia Juárez◆Coffee◆Coffee & bakery◆$

Specialty coffee in the back garden of a Porfirian mansion at Nápoles 47. The wifi is fast and they hand it to you as soon as you order, and the garden is full of people working away from the noise of the street, with extra seating inside.

It is small, and the tables with power go early in the morning. Arrive first and claim one.

Niddo

II

For an early weekday hour

Niddo

Colonia Juárez◆Coffee◆Coffee & bakery◆$$

A beautiful Frida Escobedo café on Praga 24 with Chiapas coffee, open daily from 7:30. It is not built as a laptop café, so treat it as the place for an early weekday hour of email rather than a full working day.

Weekday mornings only. At the weekend the terrace is for sitting, not working.

Casa Margarita (Café Margarita)

III

For a quiet morning

Casa Margarita (Café Margarita)

Roma Norte◆Coffee◆Coffee & bakery◆$$

A restored 1903 mansion in Roma Norte with a café in the patio. The wifi was fast enough to work on when I filmed, and the two front sitting rooms of the house are set up to be lingered in.

Mornings are the practical window. The house turns social in the evening and hosts readings and events.

Orquídea

IV

For a Condesa office

Orquídea

Condesa◆Coffee◆Healthy◆$$

A café under the trees on Avenida Ámsterdam with wifi, indoor tables and outdoor seating, opening at seven on weekdays. A lot of the neighbourhood uses it as a morning office.

It gets crowded from about ten to one on weekdays and most of a weekend morning. Arrive early if you need a table with a plug.

Bucra Coffee
Watch · 45 sec
V

For a Polanco breakfast meeting

Bucra Coffee

Polanco◆Brunch◆Middle Eastern◆$$

A café and boulangerie on Horacio 330 in Polanco, with Turkish coffee brewed on sand, single-origin filter coffee and a Middle Eastern breakfast menu from 8:00 to 13:00. The Polanco pick for a working breakfast or a meeting over coffee.

Valet parking at the door, which makes it the easiest meeting spot on this list if you drive.

Marne Café

VI

For working late

Marne Café

Roma Norte◆Coffee◆Coffee & bakery◆$$

An all-day café from a team of Pujol alumni, with a brutalist interior, bread baked daily and specialty coffee. Open until ten at night six days a week, the latest working hours on this list.

Monday to Saturday 8:00 to 22:00, Sunday from 9:00. The crab cake breakfast is worth a break from the screen.

How I picked

Why six, and not forty

A café you can work from needs four things: wifi that holds, a plug, permission to stay and a quiet hour. I judged these six on exactly that, and only on what I saw myself on each visit. Where I did not test something, the entry says so rather than guessing.

The ranking runs from the best full-day office down to the places that suit one specific working hour: an early weekday, a Polanco meeting, a late evening.

Questions

Before you go out

What is the best café to work from in Mexico City?+

Testarudo in Colonia Juárez. The wifi is fast and offered as soon as you order, the garden behind the Porfirian mansion is quiet, and it is full of people working. The tables with plugs go early, so arrive first.

Which cafés have good wifi?+

Testarudo, Casa Margarita and Orquídea all had wifi good enough to work on when I visited, and Testarudo's is the fastest. I did not test the wifi at Bucra or Marne, so treat those as places for a few hours rather than a full day of calls.

How long can I stay?+

At Testarudo and Orquídea, working through a morning is normal and nobody hurries you, as long as you keep ordering. At Casa Margarita, mornings are the window before the house turns social. Niddo is for an hour, not a day.

Where can I work in Condesa?+

Orquídea on Avenida Ámsterdam, open from seven on weekdays, with wifi and indoor and outdoor tables. It gets crowded from about ten, so come early for a table with a plug.

Which café is open late for working?+

Marne Café in Roma Norte, open until ten at night Monday to Saturday. Casa Margarita is open late too, but the evening there is social rather than quiet.

Is Niddo good for working?+

Not really. It is one of the most beautiful cafés in the city, but it is not built for laptops, especially at the weekend. Use it for an early weekday hour and move to Testarudo, a short walk away, for a real working session.
