What Mesa de Origen is
Mesa de Origen is the restaurant of Amomoxtli, a boutique hotel in Valle de Atongo on the edge of Tepoztlán, Morelos. It sits inside the hotel grounds but works as a public restaurant, which is the part most visitors do not realise: you can book a table without being a guest.
The setting is the selling point. The building is contemporary with Mexican materials, opening onto the hotel gardens with a view of the Sierra del Tepozteco, the cliff wall that sits over the town. You can take a table outdoors in the garden or an indoor one behind windows, and there is a terrace that is the seat to ask for in the late afternoon. The hotel also runs a pool bar and a bar in the main house, which are separate from the restaurant.
The kitchen’s stated philosophy is to honour local culture by using regional products and recovering home recipes from the town. That means ingredients bought in the Tepoztlán market and from Morelos producers, cooked with a wood oven and a tlecuil, the traditional hearth, rather than a menu imported from Mexico City.
Who cooks here
The menu is the work of creative chef Edher Cervantes and executive chef Ivan Quiroz, with Miguel Ángel Fabián as chef de casa. Cervantes built the menu by researching the traditional dishes of Tepoztlán and the surrounding villages, then setting them out so the kitchen cooks to the season rather than to a fixed card. The result is a short menu that changes, with ancestral family recipes treated as the source material.
How the menu works
Mesa de Origen runs one continuous service from 8:00 to 21:00, so breakfast, lunch and dinner come from the same kitchen on the same day.
- Breakfast is the meal the garden was built for and the one most day visitors book.
- Lunch and dinner lean on moles, corn and local produce, with the wood oven doing much of the work.
- The terrace is worth requesting in spring and summer for the late-afternoon light over the sierra.
- Special occasions are handled by the hotel, and some culinary experiences and private dinners need to be booked a day in advance.
What to order
Dishes the restaurant and Mexican food press consistently name:
- Elote tepozteco, roasted corn with grasshopper mayonnaise and cheese.
- Jamaica tacos, crisp, with peanut and dried chillies.
- Mole de cenizas with rabbit, an ash mole.
- Creamy rice with pork, goat cheese and wild mushrooms.
- Fish of the day with chileatole.
- Pepita mole, Coatetelco bream, mole from Tlayacapan, tamales with coral tree flower, and itacates, the local corn empanadas.
- Chocolate tamal with corn ice cream, the dessert reviewers keep picking out.
What it costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Breakfast, lunch and dinner | à la carte, no published set menu price |
| Price level, per listings | moderate to upper moderate for Mexico |
| Drinks | charged separately |
| Parking | valet at the hotel |
The honest position on price: this is one of the few figures I could not pin down. Time Out Mexico and OpenTable mark Mesa de Origen at three of four price levels, and Marco Beteta’s guide at two of four, so budget for a boutique-hotel restaurant rather than a town-centre comedor and confirm when you book. Discounts appear from time to time through Mexican bank card promotions, which is worth a question at the table.
How to book

Weekends in Tepoztlán are busy, because the town is a standard day trip from Mexico City, so book Saturday and Sunday breakfast ahead and ask for the terrace or a garden table by name. Private dinners and the hotel’s culinary experiences need a day’s notice.
Getting there
- Address: Prolongación Matamoros 115, Valle de Atongo, Tepoztlán 62520, Morelos, Mexico, inside Hotel Amomoxtli. Some reservation platforms list the restaurant at Tenochtitlán 16 in the same neighbourhood.
- From Mexico City: about an hour and fifteen minutes by car via the Mexico to Cuernavaca highway.
- From Cuernavaca: about 30 minutes.
- From the Tepoztlán centre and market: a short drive or a long walk, since Valle de Atongo sits below the town centre.
- Parking: valet parking at the hotel, which is a real advantage in a town where parking is difficult on weekends.
Before you go
- You do not need to be a guest. Say so when you book, and reserve as an outside diner.
- Ask for the terrace or the garden. The sierra view is most of what you are paying for.
- Go early on a weekend. Tepoztlán fills with day trippers from Mexico City by late morning.
- Combine it with the hike. The Tepozteco pyramid trail is steep and best done early, with breakfast either side of it.
- Confirm the bill expectations. There is no fixed menu price published, so ask about the current menu when you reserve.
- Pair it with the farm. For the other Tepoztlán table worth planning a day around, see my Parcela review, the regenerative farm restaurant on the other side of town.
- Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to stay at Amomoxtli to eat at Mesa de Origen?+
No. Mesa de Origen is open to the general public, not only to Amomoxtli hotel guests, and it takes outside reservations through OpenTable and by phone. That is the main reason it is worth knowing about: it is a hotel restaurant you can book for breakfast on a day trip.
What are Mesa de Origen's hours?+
Mesa de Origen serves daily from 8:00 to 21:00, which covers breakfast, lunch and dinner in one continuous service. Breakfast in the garden is the meal most day trippers come for. Confirm when you book, because hotel restaurants adjust hours in low season.
What is the food like at Mesa de Origen?+
It is Morelos cooking rather than generic Mexican. The kitchen uses ingredients from Morelos and the Tepoztlán market, cooks over a wood oven and a tlecuil, the traditional hearth, and rebuilds home recipes from the town and the villages around it. Expect moles, tamales, corn dishes and local fish rather than international hotel food.
What should I order at Mesa de Origen?+
Dishes the restaurant and reviewers single out include the elote tepozteco with grasshopper mayonnaise and cheese, crisp jamaica tacos with peanut and dried chillies, mole de cenizas with rabbit, creamy rice with pork, goat cheese and wild mushrooms, and the chocolate tamal with corn ice cream for dessert. The menu also runs pepita mole, Coatetelco bream and tamales with coral tree flower.
How much does Mesa de Origen cost?+
There is no published fixed price. Listings place Mesa de Origen in the moderate to upper-moderate band for Mexico, with Time Out Mexico and OpenTable marking it at three of four price levels and Marco Beteta's guide at two of four. Treat it as a boutique-hotel restaurant bill rather than a Tepoztlán street-food one, and confirm current prices when you reserve.
Where is Mesa de Origen and how far is it from Mexico City?+
Prolongación Matamoros 115, Valle de Atongo, Tepoztlán 62520, Morelos, inside Hotel Amomoxtli. It is about an hour and fifteen minutes from Mexico City by car and around 30 minutes from central Cuernavaca, which makes it a realistic breakfast stop on a day trip.
Is Mesa de Origen good for families?+
Yes. Mesa de Origen has a garden and a terrace with views of the Sierra del Tepozteco, there is space for children to be outside, and the hours cover a normal family breakfast or lunch. Valet parking at the hotel takes the hardest part of driving into Tepoztlán out of the equation.
Do I need a reservation at Mesa de Origen?+
Book if you are coming as a couple on a weekend, with a group, or for a special occasion, and book the terrace if you want the view. Reservations go through OpenTable or by phone at +52 739 395 0012. On a weekday morning a walk-in is usually fine.
