What Parcela is
Parcela is a restaurant on an organic farm at Ignacio Zaragoza 408 in Tepoztlán, Morelos, with the Tepozteco cliffs above it. It opened in March 2021 and describes itself as a regenerative food project rather than a restaurant with a kitchen garden, which is a fair distinction: the plot, the nursery and the soil work are the business, and the dining room is how it pays for itself.
The garden holds more than 250 plant species, including more than 20 vegetables and more than 20 aromatic herbs, and currently supplies around 60 percent of what the kitchen cooks with. Beets, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, radishes, watermelon and coffee are all grown on site. Everything else comes from producers nearby who farm the same way, which the team describes as kilometre zero sourcing.
Around the restaurant there is a native plant nursery producing up to 10,000 plants a year for forest restoration, a soil laboratory, biodigesters for organic waste, solar power, a water treatment system for the restrooms, EV charging and a small shop selling work by local artisans and designers. The restaurant runs community activities with young people around native vegetation. Taken together it reads less like a restaurant with sustainability credentials attached and more like a small agricultural operation that happens to serve lunch.
Who is behind it
David Contreras founded Parcela in March 2021, and the project is now run by five partners, none of whom came from a professional agricultural background. The kitchen is led by chef Marco Cruz, whose brief is straightforward: keep local products as the main focus and cook whatever the plot delivers. That is why the menu is deliberately short and rewritten every month rather than fixed. The team has been open about learning the farming side as they went, which is unusual for a project that now supplies most of its own kitchen.
How the menu works
The menu follows the harvest. Dishes come and go as things ripen, so the card you see will not be the card from two months earlier.
- Short and monthly. The list is deliberately brief and changes with the growing cycles.
- Vegetable first. The garden drives the menu, and vegetarians are well served rather than accommodated.
- Meat and fish appear, sourced from producers aligned with the farm.
- The garden walk. Guided tours of the huerto run for small groups, reported on the first Saturday of each month at 12:00 and 14:00.
What to order
Dishes reported on the menu across 2025 and 2026, as a guide to the style:
- Salmon trout ceviche.
- Roasted cauliflower with avocado hummus.
- Heirloom tomato salad with fennel.
- Roasted beets with fennel oil.
- Pappardelle al pomodoro.
- Local chicken with potato purée and vanilla.
- Trout with pistachio.
- Beef burger with eggplant mayonnaise.
What it costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| À la carte dishes | no published fixed price, menu rewritten monthly |
| Price level | mid range for Tepoztlán |
| Drinks | charged separately |
| Garden tour | ask when booking, small groups only |
Price is the figure I could not verify with a published number, because the menu changes every month and the restaurant does not publish a set price. What is clear from the listings and from the room is the band: more than a market comedor in the town centre, less than the boutique-hotel restaurants. Ask when you book if the budget matters. Drinks, including coffee grown on the property, are charged separately, and the shop is easy to spend money in on the way out.
How to book
- WhatsApp: +52 777 569 8824.
- Email: hello@parcela.com.mx.
- Restaurant phone: +52 739 395 4348.
- OpenTable: search for Parcela Restaurante, Tepoztlán.
- Instagram: @parcela_tepoztlan for current hours, closures and tour dates.
Parcela is open Thursday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Monday from 10:00 to 18:00, and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Weekends are the busy service, because Tepoztlán is a standard Mexico City day trip, so book Saturday and Sunday ahead. If you want the garden tour, say so when you reserve.
Getting there
- Address: Ignacio Zaragoza 408, Tepoztlán, Morelos, Mexico.
- From Mexico City: about an hour and fifteen minutes by car on the Mexico to Cuernavaca highway.
- From the Tepoztlán centre: a short drive or a walk, depending on where you are staying in town.
- Parking: on site, with EV charging available.
- Public transport: buses run from Mexico City to Tepoztlán, then a local taxi for the last stretch.
Before you go
- Check the day. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which ruins more than a few day trips.
- Time it after the hike. The Tepozteco pyramid trail is steep and hot; a long lunch in a garden afterwards is the right order.
- Ask about the garden walk when you book rather than on arrival, since the groups are small.
- The menu will have changed. Do not go for a specific dish you read about.
- Good for vegetarians and children. Open ground, plenty of vegetables and a shop to wander through.
- Pair it with a hotel breakfast. For the other side of eating in Tepoztlán, see my Mesa de Origen review at Hotel Amomoxtli.
- Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions
What is Parcela in Tepoztlán?+
Parcela is a restaurant built inside its own organic, regenerative farm in Tepoztlán, Morelos. It opened in March 2021, grows around 60 percent of the ingredients it cooks with on site, and buys the rest from nearby producers working the same way. The garden holds more than 250 plant species, so the menu is written around whatever is ready.
What are Parcela's opening hours?+
Parcela is open Thursday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00 and on Monday from 10:00 to 18:00, and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The two closed days catch people out, so check before driving from Mexico City for lunch. Hours shift with the season, so confirm by WhatsApp.
Do I need a reservation at Parcela?+
Book for weekends. Parcela takes reservations by WhatsApp at +52 777 569 8824, by email at hello@parcela.com.mx, and through OpenTable, and the restaurant phone is +52 739 395 4348. Weekday lunches are usually relaxed enough to walk in.
Is Parcela good for vegetarians?+
Yes, and it is probably the best vegetarian option in Tepoztlán. The whole point of Parcela is the garden, so vegetables are the centre of the menu rather than the side: roasted cauliflower with avocado hummus, heirloom tomato salad with fennel, roasted beets with fennel oil and pasta dishes all appear. Meat and fish are on the menu too, so it is not an exclusively vegetarian restaurant.
How much does Parcela cost?+
Parcela sits in the mid range for Tepoztlán, below the boutique-hotel restaurants in town and above the market comedores. There is no published fixed menu price, and because the card is rewritten monthly the figures move, so ask when you book. Budget for a relaxed lunch with drinks rather than a tasting-menu bill.
Can you visit the garden at Parcela?+
Yes. Parcela runs guided walks of the huerto for small groups, reported on the first Saturday of each month at 12:00 and 14:00, and the garden is part of the setting whether or not you take a tour. Ask when you reserve, because the schedule changes and places are limited.
Where is Parcela and how far is it from Mexico City?+
Ignacio Zaragoza 408, Tepoztlán, Morelos. It is roughly an hour and fifteen minutes from Mexico City by car on the Cuernavaca highway, which makes Parcela a realistic lunch after a morning on the Tepozteco trail.
What makes Parcela different from other farm-to-table restaurants?+
The farm came first. Parcela runs its own soil laboratory, biodigesters for waste, solar power, water treatment for the restrooms, EV chargers and a native plant nursery that produces up to 10,000 plants a year for forest restoration. Most of what is described as farm to table in Mexico is sourcing; here the restaurant sits on the plot.
