The best restaurants in
Colonia Juárez

Where should you eat in Colonia Juárez? These six, from a Big Mamma trattoria to a whole tuna broken down at the bar every Friday, every one of them eaten at and filmed on my own visit.

The six

Juárez is where Mexico City's newest openings land. Three of these six are on Praga, two of them sharing a single mansion at number 14.

Colonia Juárez◆Fine dining◆Mexican◆$$$

Chef Paco Hidalgo's contemporary Mexican restaurant on the upper floor of the old mansion at Praga 14, directly above La Bellezza. A one-page menu with real flavour and portions that fill you up, about 1,000 to 1,500 pesos for three courses, and a wine list with non-alcoholic Rioja options.

Open Tuesday to Saturday. It is the quiet room upstairs while the party happens downstairs.

For the Italian

La Bellezza (Big Mamma Group)

Colonia Juárez◆Casual dinner◆Italian◆$$$

Big Mamma Group's first restaurant in Latin America: a maximalist main room, a mirrored Italian garden, a secret bar behind a curtain and library nooks for private dinners. Handmade pasta and Neapolitan pizza at normal Mexico City prices.

It is the hotspot of the season. Book well ahead, and find the bar behind the curtain after dinner.

For the bistro

Biggie's

Colonia Juárez◆Casual dinner◆American◆$$$

A New York-style bistro opened this summer by chef Ricardo Garrido and creative director Kenya Martin, named after The Notorious B.I.G. The burger in pepper sauce is the order, and three plates come to about 760 pesos a person.

Opens at three. The terrace bar table is kept for walk-ins.

RANMA

Colonia Juárez◆Casual dinner◆Japanese◆$$$

A tiny sushi spot behind a mirrored corridor with a glass ceiling, an open kitchen and one shared glass table, where chef Magdiel works in front of you with fish from Baja California. The crab maki with truffle oil is torched at the table.

Weekday lunch is the time to walk in. Named after Ranma ½, if the mirrored corridor did not tip you off.

For tuna day

Wanwan Sakaba

Colonia Juárez◆Casual dinner◆Japanese◆$$$

A Tokyo-style tavern where every Friday at one o'clock a whole tuna arrives and the Japanese chef breaks it down at the bar, start to finish. The maguro sashimi mix from that fish is 580 pesos, three nigiri 340.

Book the bar for Friday at one. Those seats go first, and the show is the reason to come.

Conchudo Oyster Bar

For the oyster terrace

Conchudo Oyster Bar

Juárez◆Seafood◆Healthy◆$$

A new oyster bar on the flower-filled top-floor terrace of an old casona at Praga 29. Oysters and clams come fresh daily from regenerative farms in Baja California Sur, the vegetables from their own ranch in Valle de Bravo, and the aguachiles include a vegan one with cocoa, cucumber and pineapple. Oysters are 50 pesos each, 600 a dozen.

Wednesday is two-for-one oysters, which brings them to about 25 pesos each. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

How I picked

Why six, and not forty

Colonia Juárez is where the city's newest restaurants keep opening, and most guides have not caught up with it yet. These six are the ones I ate at and filmed, each doing something nobody else in the neighbourhood does.

They are ordered by the kind of meal: a chef's dinner, an Italian scene, a bistro, a sushi counter, a weekly tuna show and an oyster terrace.
