Breakfast and coffee in
Puerto Escondido

Where should you have breakfast or a good coffee in Puerto Escondido? These four, from a beach terrace at Bacocho to a laptop-friendly coffee bar in La Punta, every one of them visited and filmed on my own visit.

The four

Three of the four are a short walk apart in La Punta. Pez Gallo is the one worth a ten-minute ride, for breakfast with the ocean in front of you.

Pez Gallo

Playa Bacocho◆Brunch◆Mexican◆$

A proper beachfront terrace with table service over Playa Bacocho, not a sand-floor palapa. The long breakfast menu runs 8:00 to 12:00 every day: Mexican classics, spinach crêpes, hot cakes with caramelised banana and a light section of oatmeal, fruit and sourdough avocado toast, with most dishes between 90 and 190 pesos.

Bacocho is not a swimming beach: it has heavy surf and a powerful undertow. Eat here, swim somewhere else.

Glou Glou (Casa TO)

Brisas de Zicatela◆Casual dinner◆Mexican◆$$$ ◆Michelin

The terrace restaurant of Casa TO, a concrete-temple hotel whose pool was inspired by a sixth-century cistern in Istanbul. Breakfast is à la carte every day, the matcha is excellent, and you do not need to be a guest.

Breakfast runs daily 8:30 to 12:00. Book on OpenTable for a weekend morning.

How I picked

Why four, and not forty

Mornings in Puerto Escondido decide the day, and the best of them happen before the heat. These four are the breakfasts and coffees I visited and filmed: one on the beach, one for working, one bakery and one design-hotel terrace.

Dinner has its own guide. This one is for the hours before noon.
