What Kab Khao is
Kab Khao is a Thai restaurant at Liverpool 45 in colonia Juárez, Mexico City. It opened in August 2026 and Time Out México reviewed it about two weeks later, which makes it one of the newest Thai kitchens in the city rather than an established name.
The room is built for sharing. Neon signage marks the front, the interior runs to strong colour with flowers and a yellow-lit bar, and the bar windows fold open onto the pavement so half the seating effectively faces the street. The kitchen is open, so you watch the wok work from the dining room. It is dog friendly.
The look is colourful and put together rather than street stall, which is worth saying because Thai food in Mexico City is usually sold one way or the other.
What sets it apart in a city with a long list of Thai restaurants is who is cooking. Amy is the founder, she is Thai, and she is physically at the pass cooking her own family recipes. If you want one rule for picking a Thai restaurant here, that is it: look for the one where the founder is actually in the kitchen. It is the reason the food tastes less adapted than the average Thai menu in Mexico City.
Who cooks here
Amy Khumyouang runs the kitchen. Her full name is Pornpimon Khumyouang, she was born and trained in Thailand, and before Kab Khao she cooked at Tiin Thai in Mexico City, a Bangkok street food project. Her earlier career includes head chef roles in Dubai, Doha and Tulum. The recipes on the Kab Khao menu are her family’s.
One of her partners is Rodrigo Torices, known around Mexico City as Toro, whose other projects are Chubbies Burger, Fat Bastard and Brass Monkey. That pairing explains the format: a Thai cook’s menu inside a bar-literate, street-facing room.
How the menu works
There is no tasting menu and no set format. Kab Khao serves Thai plates meant for the middle of the table, with generous portions, and you build a meal from starters, a soup, a stir fry or curry, rice or noodles, and a dessert.
- Starters: fresh vegetable spring rolls with a spicy dipping sauce, and moo ping kati sod kow niew, grilled pork skewers served with sticky rice.
- Soup: tom yum, the hot and sour Thai soup.
- Wok and curry: pad thai with chicken or shrimp, pad ka prow, a stir fry with holy basil and chilli, and green and red curries.
- Dessert: Thai tea soft serve with toasted coconut, bua loy puek, taro dumplings in coconut milk, and kow niew ma-muang, sticky rice with mango.
- Drinks: a pandan coconut cooler made with coconut water, pandan, lime and mineral water, a Phuket colada, a Thai tea espresso martini, and Singha, the Thai lager.
What I ate
The plates I would order again, in the order they landed:
- Fresh vegetable spring rolls with a spicy sauce, full of flavour rather than fried into anonymity.
- Tom yum, the best version I have had in a long stretch.
- Pad thai, which comes with chicken or with shrimp. Juicy rather than dry and sweet.
- Thai tea ice cream with coconut crumble for dessert.
The cooking read as lighter than the Thai food I usually get in Mexico City, which is not what I expected walking in. The menu is longer than this and changes with what the kitchen can source, so treat the list as a starting point.
What it costs
Kab Khao had not published a menu with prices online when I filmed in September 2026, and no review I could find quotes figures. Rather than invent numbers, here is the honest picture.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Shared plates and mains | Mid-range for colonia Juárez, no published figures |
| Cocktails and Thai beer | Charged separately |
| Service | Not included, 10 to 15 per cent is normal in Mexico City |
Time Out México describes the portions as generous and the bill as the kind that does not break the piggy bank, which puts it in the everyday bracket for the neighbourhood rather than the special occasion one. Ask for the printed menu when you sit down and expect the numbers to move, since the restaurant is only weeks old.
Do you need a reservation
The dining room is small. There is no reservation platform listed for Kab Khao, so the practical options are a direct message to @kabkhaomx on Instagram, or turning up. Weekday lunch and the first hour of service are easy. Friday and Saturday evenings fill, and the tables at the open bar windows go first.
Getting there
- Address: Liverpool 45, Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, 06600 Mexico City.
- Metrobús: Hamburgo, Line 1 on Avenida de los Insurgentes, a short walk.
- Metro: Insurgentes on Line 1 is the closest station, roughly ten minutes on foot.
- On foot: it is inside the Juárez restaurant cluster, walkable from Glorieta de Insurgentes and from the Havre and Versalles strips.
- Parking: street parking in Juárez is metered and scarce. A taxi or a ride app is simpler.
Before you go
- Come for lunch if you want a quiet table. The room gets loud in the evening and the open windows put you close to the street noise.
- Bring the dog. It is dog friendly, and the window tables are the ones to ask for.
- Say what you avoid. The kitchen is vegetarian friendly, but Thai bases lean on fish sauce, so be explicit rather than assume.
- Order the soup even in warm weather. The tom yum is the dish the kitchen is clearly proudest of.
- Pair it with the neighbourhood. Juárez is dense with places worth a second stop. For coffee and something baked the next morning, see my La Valiente review, a few streets away on Hamburgo.
- Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Kab Khao in Mexico City?+
Kab Khao is at Liverpool 45 in colonia Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, Mexico City. The closest public transport is the Hamburgo stop on Metrobús Line 1 along Avenida de los Insurgentes, a few minutes on foot. You can spot it from the street by the neon sign and the bar windows that open onto the pavement.
What are Kab Khao's opening hours?+
Time Out México lists Kab Khao as open Tuesday to Saturday from 13:00 to 22:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 19:00, which leaves Monday as the closed day. It is a new restaurant, so hours can still shift. Check the @kabkhaomx Instagram account before a long trip across the city.
Who is the chef at Kab Khao?+
The kitchen is run by Amy Khumyouang, a Thai chef who previously cooked at Tiin Thai in Mexico City and has worked as a head chef in Dubai, Doha and Tulum. One of the partners behind Kab Khao is Rodrigo Torices, known in Mexico City as Toro, from Chubbies Burger, Fat Bastard and Brass Monkey. Amy was working the pass when I filmed.
What should I order at Kab Khao?+
The tom yum soup and the fresh vegetable spring rolls with their spicy dipping sauce are the two starters I would order again at Kab Khao, and the pad thai comes with chicken or shrimp. Time Out also singles out the moo ping kati sod kow niew, grilled pork skewers with sticky rice, and the pad ka prow stir fry with basil and chilli. For dessert, the Thai tea ice cream with toasted coconut crumble.
Is Kab Khao expensive?+
Kab Khao sits in the mid-range bracket for colonia Juárez rather than the fine dining one, and Time Out México describes the plates as generous and not the kind that break the bank. The restaurant had not published a menu with prices online when I filmed in September 2026, so I am not quoting a figure. Ask for the menu when you sit down, and budget for drinks separately.
Is Kab Khao dog friendly?+
Yes. Kab Khao is dog friendly, which is common in colonia Juárez but still worth confirming before you walk over. The best spots for a dog are the tables near the bar windows onto the street. Staff will bring a bowl of water if you ask.
Are there vegetarian options at Kab Khao?+
Yes. Kab Khao is vegetarian friendly, and the fresh vegetable spring rolls, the curries and the pad thai all exist in vegetable versions in Thai cooking. Thai kitchens use fish sauce and shrimp paste as a base, so say clearly whether you avoid all animal products. The staff at Kab Khao can tell you which plates can be made without them.
Do I need a reservation at Kab Khao?+
Kab Khao is a small room, so reservations help at dinner on Friday and Saturday. There is no booking platform listed for it, and the most reliable route is a direct message to @kabkhaomx on Instagram. Otherwise arrive early, around opening, or eat at the bar.
