What Ala Burger is

Ala Burger, written Alaburger on most maps, is a burger and pizza restaurant on Alejandro Cárdenas Peralta, the main street of La Punta Zicatela in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. It sits one block back from Playa La Punta in the Brisas de Zicatela neighbourhood, in the middle of the strip of cafes, surf shops and bars that has grown up around the point break.

The format has not changed in years: burgers grilled outdoors, served in baskets with a side of potato wedges, on a large open patio of long wooden tables lit by candles. Seating is communal, so groups share tables and solo travellers end up next to strangers. There is also a wood-fired oven that turns out thin-crust pizzas the size of a small table.

Ala Burger is one of the longest-running restaurants in La Punta. It predates most of the neighbourhood around it: when I first ate here about ten years ago, La Punta was a couple of dirt roads with very few places to eat, and this was one of them. It is now one of the most-reviewed restaurants in Puerto Escondido, with over a thousand Google reviews, and it stays open through the low season when many neighbours close.

Who is behind it

The restaurant is a small owner-run operation and has no website, so public information about the people behind it is thin. When I first came, the burgers were made by a man everyone called Rich, and the running joke among regulars was that he put something in them because nobody ever left in a bad mood. I have not been able to confirm current ownership from published sources, so treat that as a memory from my early visits rather than a fact about who is at the grill today.

How the menu works

The menu is short and printed on a board: about ten burgers, a handful of pizzas, and drinks. You order at the table and pay at the end.

  • Burgers: the classic cheeseburger, a tuna burger with guacamole and a fish burger are the three most popular. Local blogs also single out the Bardot burger. There is a vegetarian burger and a vegan burger with potato-based cheese, mushroom and arugula.
  • Sides: every burger comes in a basket with hand-cut potato wedges under a creamy cheese sauce and parsley. Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, lettuce, tomato and onion sit on the table.
  • Pizza: thin-crust pizzas from a wood-fired oven, mozzarella based, in a large format meant for sharing. A vegan pizza with potato cheese, mushrooms, olives, red pepper and onion is listed, and a gluten-free base appears on some menus.
  • Drinks: beer, aguas frescas (fresh fruit waters) and mezcal cocktails in several flavours.

What I ate

I went back for the same thing I have always ordered here, a burger off the grill with the potato wedges, at one of the big shared tables with a good crowd around. The burgers were the same as I remembered from my first visits: large, simply built and cooked over an open grill. Come hungry, because portions are big and the pizza in particular is more than one person needs.

What it costs

Prices below are from listings and reviews published in 2025 and 2026; I did not record my own bill when I filmed in July 2026. They move a little each season.

ItemPrice
Burger with potato wedges150 to 220 MXN, about 8 to 12 USD
Pizza, large, shareable150 to 220 MXN, about 8 to 12 USD
Beer, agua fresca or cocktail50 to 120 MXN, about 3 to 6 USD
Typical spend per personAbout 350 MXN, about 19 USD

That puts Ala Burger 20 to 40 pesos above the cheaper burger stands in La Punta, which is the going rate for a sit-down patio with table service. A group of four sharing two pizzas and a round of drinks can eat for under 1,000 MXN, about 55 USD.

Do you need a reservation

No. Ala Burger does not take reservations and there is no booking platform. Walk in, find a space at a shared table and wait for a server.

  • Opening hours: daily from about 13:00 to close to midnight. Directory listings say 13:00 to 23:45; the restaurant’s Instagram, @alaburgerpe, says 12:00 to 24:00.
  • Phone: +52 954 559 4712.
  • Busiest time: 20:00 to 22:00 in high season, December to April, and during the surf competitions on Zicatela. Food can take 15 to 20 minutes at peak.
  • Quietest time: early afternoon, when the patio is mostly empty.

Getting there

  • Address: Alejandro Cárdenas Peralta, Emiliano Zapata, Brisas de Zicatela, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca 70934, Mexico.
  • Neighbourhood: La Punta Zicatela, at the southern end of Zicatela beach. The restaurant is on the main street, one block inland from Playa La Punta.
  • On foot: five minutes from the La Punta surf break and the beach access at the end of the street. Almost everything in La Punta is within a ten-minute walk.
  • From Zicatela or the centre: 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or mototaxi along the coastal road. Colectivo vans run along the Carretera Costera and drop you a few blocks inland.
  • Parking: the streets are sand and narrow; parking on the street is possible on quiet nights, and one 2025 listing mentions valet parking on busy ones.
  • Nearby on the same strip: Chicama, the Peruvian place with the nightly queue, is a few minutes’ walk away, and Monte Alpán Bakery is the breakfast option for the next morning.

Before you go

  • Dress for the sand. The patio is open-air, floors are dusty and the streets outside are unpaved. Flip-flops and beachwear are the norm.
  • Bring repellent. Evening seating in La Punta means mosquitoes, especially in the rainy months from June to October.
  • Carry cash. Cards are accepted according to 2025 listings, but older reviews say cash only and card terminals in La Punta fail when the signal drops.
  • Share the table. Communal seating is the point. If you want a private dinner, this is not the place; if you want to meet other travellers, it is.
  • Order pizza to share. One pizza is enough for two hungry people. The burger and wedges basket is a full meal on its own.
  • Kids are fine. It is a casual family patio earlier in the evening; later on, the music gets louder and a DJ or live band plays some nights from around 20:00 to 22:00.
  • Pair it with the beach. Sunset at Playa La Punta is a two-minute walk from the tables, so eat after the light goes.
  • Check the hours before you go. The hours on this page come from the venue’s public listings, which drift, so confirm on Google Maps or the venue’s own channels before a special trip.
