Where to go on a first date in
Mexico City

Where should you take a first date in Mexico City? Seven places, from casual drinks to a dinner that is not too formal, every one of them visited and filmed on my own visit.

The seven

A first date needs an exit. The first two are drinks you can turn into dinner, the last three are dinners that never feel like an interview.

Club Sorbet

I

For casual drinks

Club Sorbet

Condesa◆Bar◆Dessert◆$$

A garden hidden behind a parking lot under the jacarandas, with artisanal sorbet, a natural wine list and a DJ. Walking someone through a parking lot and into this garden is the best opening move in the city.

Go in the late afternoon. If it goes well, Condesa is all around you for dinner.

Provocateur

II

For wine and conversation

Provocateur

Roma Norte◆Bar◆International◆$$

A small, dim wine bar in Roma Norte with an enormous list of Mexican and international wine by the glass or bottle, plus cheese plates and tapas. Quiet enough to actually hear each other, and choosing a glass together breaks the ice.

Keep it to two. The room is small, and that is exactly why it works.

Ritmo Café

III

For a daytime date

Ritmo Café

Roma Norte◆Coffee◆International◆$$

A café by day and a listening bar by night, with a DJ from nine in the morning, a cosy garden and a brunch that went viral for its pancakes. The low-pressure choice when the first meeting is a coffee.

Afternoon is the sweet spot, when the shareable starters come out and the music picks up.

Somma Rooftop

IV

For drinks with a view

Somma Rooftop

Roma Norte◆Rooftop◆International◆$$$

A rooftop wine bar on top of the pink Casona Roma Norte, with a long by-the-glass list, share plates and live DJs. A step up from a bar without the weight of a dinner.

Book a weekend sunset. Share plates turn it into dinner if the conversation runs on.

Biggie's
Watch · 45 sec
V

For a relaxed dinner

Biggie's

Colonia Juárez◆Casual dinner◆American◆$$$

A New York-style bistro in Colonia Juárez named after The Notorious B.I.G., with a burger in pepper sauce, salads and baby potatoes with asparagus and feta, about 760 pesos a person for three plates. Good food, good music, zero stiffness.

The bar table on the terrace is kept for walk-ins, which suits a date that started somewhere else.

Fuego
Watch · 45 sec
VI

For dinner on a roof

Fuego

Roma Norte◆Rooftop◆Steak & grill◆$$$

A rooftop garden in Roma Norte where everything is cooked on the grill, with generous portions, classic cocktails, pretty mocktails and a basketball court next door. Start with the aguachiles, finish with the Krispy Kreme donut dessert.

Share the dessert. It is the moment the date stops being a first date.

Jardín Horacio
Watch · 45 sec
VII

For the garden dinner

Jardín Horacio

Polanco◆Restaurant◆Contemporary Mexican◆$$$

A garden restaurant on the first floor of Horacio 330 in Polanco, with steaks from the coals, pastas, a wagyu burger and inventive desserts, mains around 380 to 600 pesos. Polished enough to feel like an occasion, relaxed enough to feel like a date.

Order the coal-roasted cauliflower and the Dubai chocolate strawberries to share.

How I picked

Why seven, and not forty

A first date is a different problem from a romantic dinner: you need somewhere easy to arrive, easy to talk and easy to leave or to stay. These seven are places I visited and filmed that do all three.

They run from casual drinks to a dinner that is not too formal, so you can pick by how sure you are of the evening.

Questions

Before you go out

What is the best first date spot in Mexico City?+

Club Sorbet in Condesa. You walk in through a parking lot at Avenida Michoacán 81 and find a garden under the jacarandas with sorbet, natural wine and a DJ. It is casual, memorable, and dinner is a short walk away if it goes well.

Where can I go for drinks on a first date?+

Provocateur for a quiet wine bar where you can talk, Somma Rooftop for drinks with a view, and Club Sorbet for a garden with natural wine. All three let a drink turn into dinner without changing places.

What is a good daytime first date?+

Ritmo Café in Roma Norte, a café with a DJ from nine in the morning, a garden and a viral brunch. A coffee date there feels like plans rather than an interview.

Where can I have a relaxed first date dinner?+

Biggie's in Juárez for a New York bistro with no stiffness, Fuego for dinner on a rooftop garden, and Jardín Horacio in Polanco for a garden that feels like an occasion without being formal.

Which places are quiet enough to talk?+

Provocateur is the quietest. Jardín Horacio and Biggie's are calm enough for conversation. Ritmo and Fuego have more music, which helps if the conversation needs it.

Do I need to book?+

For a weekend evening at Somma Rooftop, Fuego or Jardín Horacio, yes. Biggie's keeps a bar table for walk-ins, and Club Sorbet and Ritmo work without a plan most days.
